How much is this likely to set me back for a reconditioned engine incl. labour?

Or is anyone else in the know as to a fix for it? 98 A3

Even with second hand parts this will be a nightmare and cost a fair few quid in labour. Worthwhile if your in no rush and can do it yourself but otherwise it'll be more than the car's worth.

Isn't an A3 the same as a Golf?

Hardly makes a difference though, a replacement engine for an almost 12 year old A3 or Golf is dead money either way.

If the rest of the car is in pretty good order and the mileage is not too severe on it and another VW golf/ Audi engine/ head can be sourced and fitted for a reasonable price then it may be worth fitting? A lot of if's and it probably would not be economically viable to put it back on the road but all I'm saying is it should not be totally ruled out either. Also OP you would probably realistically have to be without the car for a few weeks if you were to go ahead with an engine change and be prepared to do some enquiring with breakers yards/ garages to get engine and best price for fitting

Engine mountings will most likely be different and that's a whole world of pain.

Got my own engine repaired in the end but had a donar car available and was quoted 150 euro to transfer an engine from one car to another (1.6 vectra) and it wasn't by a friend or anything like that. County Kerry btw. Worth pricing the job around is the point I am trying to make.

No actually. Mind the vectras and maintain them properly and they will be good to you despite what they say. The one I picked up for nothing was not minded and well... They are certainly no worse if not a hell of a lot better than the over-rated golfs or passats going by the stories I have heard of them;)

If you're on about the 1.6 petrol vectra B, you're talking out your hole. Tell yourself whatever you want to try to feel better about the car you're driving, but don't try to tell petrol heads 'round here that it's anything other than a steaming hape of ****e of an engine. I had a belt go at 35k in one (along with hundreds of others in Ireland alone) and the garage I'd bought it from eventually went bust because of the losses on the fleet yokes they had to repair.

****heap of a car if ever there was one. 1.8's and 2 litres along with diesels were all grand enough, but that 1.6 is a dirty, dirty big mark against Opel in my books. And I'm pretty bloody certain I'm not the only one around here to KNOW so.

Granted its not the best car ever in the world but its far from the worst too. Have drove a 1.6 vectra for years and like a number of friends and relations who drive the same I've never had any really serious issues with it. Certainly nothing like timing belts snapping or slipping or the like. Mine was still going very well up until a few months back with 172,000 miles up on it until somebody drove into me and totalled it. By no means the fastest yoke in the world but it is only a family car and a general good all rounder. In any case I find it to be adequately fast enough for the road conditions in Ireland for the most part and it does return 40mpg for me in mixed driving conditions. I have drove better cars down through the years but have certainly drove worse also...Try a diesel Renault Megane...then you will know about trouble.

You can be unlucky with a car but I would be seriously shocked if 100's of them in Ireland snapped their timing belt before the 40,000 mile change interval for timing belt kit and water pump. If on the other hand you try to spare a few quid and don't change the whole kit as guided the manufacturer...well then you may be looking at a snapped timing belt alright.

Seing as you seem to know a lot and are so opinionated tell me what is a good car in the same bracket?
