I have a 512mb USB stick lying around that i hardly use cause it doesn't store a whole lot. I currently have Puppy Linux installed on it. I would like to have it handy with me in case something happens that i can't boot up my netbook and i could use it as a back up if i urgently needed to do something. Puppy Linux is cool but its quite limiting. Is there any other distro that would fit onto 512mb? Something that has a bit more functionality. If nothing fits the bill i may get a 1gb stick and install Ubuntu on it but i would like to see if i can make use of my 512mb stick first. Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks

Damn small linux will do the job. I've done the same thing before with it.

Have a look at Slax. A basic build is 199MB but you can add modules to it.

Is Damn Small Linux not smaller than Puppy Linux. I thought DSL was about 50mb while Puppy was 90mb?? I have heard of Slax before. Is it something to do with Slitaz by any chance? Or just similar names? I will look into it. Thanks :)

I use PCLinuxOS Minime release running live on a USB stick which makes it portable and bootable on most PCs that can boot from USB device. There is also a Gnome Mini release if that is preferred.
    Fast and functional. ;)

You could try dsl-n, it's damn small linux but it's not capped at 50 mb.

THB I'd buy a new USB stick of 2 or 4 GB, you should be able to pick one up for about 20 euro. You can then install pretty much any distro on it and still have some space left over for just general space as a USB drive
