Can a leaf can be taken out of this book:

The Murdoch clan closed thelondonpaper today – admitting that I will never turn the paper into profit. That leaves the Metro, the London Lite and City AM to the market. The decision to launch the paper three years was (revisionist statement looming-), in a buoyant ad market, a correct one. And an even better decision was to close it when there isn’t an advertising shilling left in the market.

Moving back to this side of the pond. Would companies that are staring down the barrel of a gun not be better off laying down the weapon rather than trying to reload it? The threesome that’s about to run the “Hetro” (Hearld AM and Metro twinning) all have their own set of troubles internally without volunteering for more.

Would the most expedient line be to can the project? Nobody, but nobody is going to launch a free sheet profitably in the Dublin market this side of the Centenary of the Rising.

The six month ABC’s that came out yesterday make for disturbing reading overall.

Herald -10%, Indo -4%, S. Indo -4%, I. Times -3%, Mail -4%, Mail On Sunday -8%. The parent companies that oversee these publications now want to join together and give away papers for nothing!

I am/was a fan of the frees (both here and aboard), but I am a bigger fan of a good decision – kill a London publication that loosing £$12m a year and keep the money to invest in profitable products.

    Leaf…. Books…

The combined circulation currently is normally 145,000 (dropped to 116k combined last month - summer and all that?).
"They" (new Co.) have stated that the new paper will have a circulation of 75,000.

    Perhaps that didn’t help.

They have to wait until November to see what happens, I'd say that's a busted flush! Wonder who will blink first?
