Dodgy Gearbox in VW Passats

Just had to cough up 1400 to replace the gearbox and clutch in a 06 1.9tdi Passat.

VW covered 50% the cost of parts while the dealer "only charged" 2 hours labour for a 4 hour job at 75 euro per hour.

Very annoyed with VW as the car has only done 40k miles and it took 2 and half weeks to sort out. We were left without a car for all that time. The dealer wouldnt even give us a banger.

Bought the car from new for 33k cash with no trade-in from the same garage. I think we have been really badly treated and will not be recommending a VW to anyone ever again.

Sorry dude, that sucks alright - a second opinion wasn't on the cards no?
but i'd like to print this post out to those pig ignorants who slag my fiat and swear by german cars...
in fairness though it could have just been a once off, check honestjohn.co.uk and your car-by-car review on your passat and see if this is even half regular...

The clutch issue is a regular occurance inthe Passat's. We've had to replace god know's however many.

We've also got a big problem with a DSG gearbox in one at the minute - its been with VW for 2 MONTHS and they cant diagnose the problem.

If i was spending my hard earned on a car, I wouldnt be buying one, after witnessing the problems they've caused us.

My father is having clutch & gearbox issues with his car. 06 1.9 tdi passat. Been to a VW dealer, and an independent twice and each time they thought they solved the problem but they didmn't.

Thanks for the heads up and the Honest John reference - I'd forgotten about him

We were looking at cars to replace the golf, which is a great motor.

Sorry to hear about gearbox and clutches in the new Passat.

My 2000 model bought from new never missed a beat.

    ONQ.

You must be mistaken. VW's don't break!

I think you are all driving French cars by accident!

Problems with 06 Passats - well I never!

The 2006 Passat is costing us more to run than any other vehicle we have on fleet. They are plauged with problems and I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy one. We've lost less money on Laguna's and Alfa's than we do on the 06 Passats.

Sorry to hear of the issues OP - just be assured you are not alone and the amount of goodwill you are getting is the same as we get in the same circumstance (and we have hundreds of Passat's on our fleet).

Have these problems only in 2006 Passats or are 2008/09 ones going to have the same problems in a couple of years?

I was thinking to replace my Nissan primera petrol to VW Passat diesel, but after what I read I'm confused what to buy.
I'm looking for a diesel car not more than 1.9 and from 2004 upwards.
    All suggestions are welcome.

We have had 2 of the current passats in the family. First one was 05, bought just as they were released... no problems whatsoever, current one is a 2008 and no problems either. Ive heard of a few of the harder driven ones giving a bit of bother though.
Why do 06 ones have a worse reputation than all other years?

Sounds like the Dual Mass Flywheel problems, common in the Passat the the Transporter well known issue with VWs from this year. There was also problems with the push button handbrake in the earlier models on the B6 platform (2005-present).

I seem to remember a certain gearbox in old Bora's giving some shocking trouble a few years back.

Most common-rail diesels have these issues due to their favourite parlour trick - two flywheels held together with shock-absorbing springs/rubber/NoMoreNails/goop of choice to smooth power delivery and lose the "van engine" feel. The issues this super-expensive technology has had borders on the biblical, but VAG and Ford have been worst hit by miles (if an aircon compressor or clutch job suddenly triples in price, its because the DMF had to be replaced with it - if one goes, the other has to be done at the same time or the DMF will get shredded).

If anything I'd say we haven't seen anything yet - this super-costly parlour trick is now in a lot of new diesels and some larger petrols and many are only just about to hit the point where they need a sudden €1500-2500 overhaul :o

Yep, had a 2005 mondeo as a company car few years ago, flywheel collapsed at less than 6 months old, 30K km ish I think. Some heap of sh1te of a car, intercooler pipe also came off one morning on the way to Rathmore.

Finished up in that job nearly 3 years ago, since then I have had the following motors

    1999 Rover 618 for 6 months
    1995 Celica SS2 for 9 months
1997 Rover 400 td for 15 months (actually 18 months but it was parked up the first 3 as it took a while to sell the Celica for the money I wanted for her)
1993 Honda Prelude for 3 months
1992 Merc 250 diesel for the last 3 months

Never have any of the above given any trouble like the Mondeo has and none of them were low in the miles department. Why folks buy new cars for trouble free motoring amazes me.

Chap I work with has the Passat with the button hand brake problem, 4 times at dealer and still troublesome.

VW quality isn't what is was. Friends 06 passat with only 20k on the clock needed a new engine. Heard of lots of problems with TDI's turbos. Another with a Touran 06, 30k ABS failed. Common issue on Tourans and Golfs around that age. We had lots of niggles with our VW's over the years. Still like them but they are no where as reliable IMO as people, and VW like to think.
