a little bit more information might help you get some answers!
Like was operating system? What music player do you use? And is it it that prompts you to convert?

    operating system windows
    windows media player
what asks me to convert is the flac program

Try playing them in Foobar2000 or VLC

I have VLC it can play just about anything.

Cant understand why windows media player cant handle stuff like this. Presumably there shouldnt really be any licencing issues with codecs ?
