The O2 cowboys lied again saying "we can't unlock iPhones".
How does that mean O2 lied?
Maybe i'm missing something, but it was apple that unlocked them, and I imagine that apple are pretty tight with their unlock software

Did you not read the link? The Finland operator sent operator settings to the itunes account.

This is not a photoshop job at all. I have an officially unlocked 3GS that was bought in Belgium. The first time u hook it up to itunes, this screen appears.

No. o2 said they won't unlock phones. They have an exclusive licence to distribute iphones in Ireland. They do not want to dilute this exclusivity by allowing the devices to appear on any other networks (as much as they can help it)

Don't be upset at O2 and don't be upset at Apple.

Be upset at our government for allowing this to happen...the shower of useless bastards that they are .

But its true. Companies can only operate with in government set parameters.

And its is painfully obvious that this government doesn't give a stuff that we get shafted on a daily basis by companies.

They pretty much appeared...why was there a better alternative? :pac:

As someone who has lived in many countries I can say with hand on heart the Irish government is a joke only bettered by third rate dictatorships and some eastern European countries.

Thats nice to know.....if there is a politics forum go there....

Your points have nothing to do with the Iphone or its unlocking.

Just blaming the government is silly, if you say that quote the laws they introduced that back this up and then we can debate the fact....or not.

WTH?? How many times must I say it. Apple and O2 operate with the law, the law which is layed down by the government.

Other countries deem it fit that the consumer have a choice and therefore Apple and the other carries have to either supply the phone unlocked or provide an unlock code.

No such law exists in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,445 ✭✭✭jd83

Isnt it only like a few countries that have these laws. Italy and belgium I remember reading somewhere that belgium is changing this so phone locking will be allowed. Ill try find link

The laws are the states laws and not the government.....we vote them in.....we allow them to do it.

If you feel so strong stand for office.

    Or live somewhere else;)

Also its a lux product, no one is putting a gun to our head to buy it.

You don't walk into a Volkswagen garage and demand a ford ?

there should be more countries where sim-locking and operator exclusivity deals are not allowed

So you are happy to buy a locked iPhone from O2 and have them tell you that even after the 2 year contract is up and now the phone is legaly your they still will not provide you with an unlock code?

Or buy an unlocked one and pay through the nose for it?

In Australia for example you can buy direct from Apple Australia an unlocked 3Gs 32gb for the same price as O2 will sell you a locked one on PAYG (I know exchange rate, blah, blah, blah whatever)

if i wasn't i wouldn't have it in my pocket. They offer a product with terms and conditions. I agreed, signed the contract and bought it.

MY bill is lower than it was on Meteor and i'm going more for it so i don't see a negative.

If you don't like the T&C don't buy the product, simple as that.

Can i buy a pint in pub A and bring it into pub B, hey its my pint....i should be allow do as i want with it ?????

Its a matter of choice and you have a choice to buy it or not....your decision.

Its only 2 out of 25 european member states that operate like Italy if i am correct ??

Oh and in Australia children can't buy cigarettes.....but they can smoke them:rolleyes:. Shall we follow all their laws:D

Now lets get our facts straight not only can they not smoke them there are many no smoking zones outside public places and entire hospital campuses are no smoking zones ;).

they should do that here. Im not too bothered just worried that other networks will start doing similar stuff.

Well I am hoping that once the exclusivity ends for O2 they will release their claws from around the phone...my gut says otherwise:(.

Anyone that has been looking at the O2 forums over the last 12 months can see that every time the issue of unlocking comes up, the mods hinge their entire argument on the fact that they retain "exclusivity" on the iPhone and will not unlock it on that basis.

I'm looking forward to the first thread once (if) the exclusivity ends and someone asks for the "new" unlocking policy to be explained ;)

I'd have to agree though, my gut says they will never agree to legal unlocking

O2 seem to be like a stubborn child. They're like "It's my phone! You can't have it!"

It's the same with their ridiculous data charges. They force me to stay with their network because they won't provide an unlock code for my 3GS, and yet they won't provide the necessary infrastructure/options to actually enjoy my iPhone the way it's meant to be. They won't invest in their network to enable tethering or Visual Voicemail and since I'm a PAYG user, they won't provide any decent data bundles.
My Mobile Internet Device is only a Mobile Internet Device when I'm in my house using my Wi-Fi. 16 apps out of my 20 apps need internet to work fully and yet O2 don't seem to want me to use them unless I fork over a euro a day (Sounds like a little but believe, it adds up) and then they won't let me switch to another Network that would actually let me enjoy my iPhone (3 which offers PAYG Data Bundles)

People should vote with there feet. If your rich :) by a factory unlocked phone if your poor (like me) buy the phone from o2 jailbreak and unlock, use one of the other providers.

o2 make owning an iphone a pain in the arse.

Not to throw the cat among the pigeons here (I'm as annoyed that I had to move to o2 just to get an iPhone) but are they not within their rights to say "we bought exclusivity for this product, it's up to us if we share it".

They have to recover the money they spent on the exclusivity deal. When that expires it might be a different story, until then unless the law says otherwise (à la Italy, Belgium, etc.) or ComReg grow a pair o2 don't need to change anuthing

Exactly. You can't blame Apple or O2 for taking advantage of the consumer laws in Ireland.

O2's attitude is really childish. They're ensuring that any opportunity people get they'll jump ship. I want the unlock code so that if I decide to move to the states with MY phone that I can use it over there.

That's nice. They've also paid for exclusivity for other phones and yet the iPhone seems to be the only phone they refuse to supply an Unlock Code for.

I'll ask you this. My 18 month contract says I cannot get it unlocked because the iPhone is subsidised by the bill.
So at the end of that 18 month contract, when the phone is fully paid off, why am I not allowed to unlock my iPhone? At that point, it is fully my phone. I've paid for it in full. So why can't I do with it what I want?
