I recently got a consultation about needing gum surgery and paid 130 euro, i was told i needed my teeth cleaned properly first and to be shown how to clean my teeth before any work was done...so i made the appointment, costing another 300, i was told then to come back in 6 wks, which i did only to be told the same thing previous and charged 130 again! this alone has put me off getting it done with this dentist...does anyone know a GOOD dentist where i can get a free consult?

Are you going to a dentist or a specialist?

Who cleaned your teeth? A dental nurse or some rip-off merchant?
I got my teeth cleaned recently by the dental nurse in the surgery and it cost me 70 euro (IIRC). How someone can charge those prices, I do not understand.

I don't think people can recommend dentists on this forum but ring up beforehand maybe and ask how much the procedure will cost. They should have price guidelines.

Hi Larianne...i was told he was a periodontist and he and his male assistant cleaned my teeth (without freezing either!)
Anyone with info please PM if you cannot post info on the board...

Larianne, your teeth were NOT cleaned by a nurse, it shows how much attention you were paying, it was done by a qualified and highly trained hygienist.
melody cool, if you were treated by a periodontist it was because your dentist felt it was in your best interest to be seen by a specialist i.e he/she is concerned that you may lose your teeth as a result of gum disease. Go cheap on this and you will have yourself to blame for future tooth loss.

In answer to the OPs question - no. A good dentist with a free consult? Doesn't exist. And if it did, it would be a bit of an oxymoron.

Op, you need to find out exactly what they are doing, what you've paid for and what future costs you'll incur.

When I got my teeth cleaned initially, it cost €150 per clean and he did a quarter at a time. I asked how much it would cost up front as I wanted to make sure I had enough money to pay for it. Also, my periodonist charged about €150 for my first visit but since then all my visits (and little bits of work and x-rays he's done) have been free as they are included in the initial consultation fee. He didn't need to do any surgical procedures as initially thought so there was no additional cost. The same dentist is doing an implant for me and the fee I'll pay includes all subsequent visits to check the success of the implant.

You really need to take control and stop paying out money without knowing what it's for. Would you blindly pay out money for any other service?
