by and large, you can get by without buying any books. I mainly relied on borrowing from the library and photocopying lots. Some books can be hard to come by, particularly when it comes to exam time. It is worthwhile to get the books for the compulsory subjects, those subjects examined by Law Society - tort, constitutional, contract, etc. - because the demand far outweighs the number of copies on shelf.

Buying new is very expensive, but might be necessary if the book is a new edition. Look at the notice board in the Student Union office for second hand copies that sell cheapo. I'll be selling a few of my old books. Give me a PM after you know what books you need and I'll let you know if I have any of them.
