I know take this seriously please! I'm on here long enough.

Looking to buy Medium sized, practical, safe, not too old, not too tired, cheap to run, cheap to fuel family car...with reasonable handling and ride compromise..

    1.4 - 1.6

Will need to do about 7 - 10k pa

Budget is about 2k - 5k not ruling out imports. Has to have room for three seats in the back.

Friend of mine recently had the same dilema, and a similar budget. Ended up with a Citroen Xsara Picasso. I drove it home for him, not a bad yoke. Speedboat handling but it does what it says on the tin.

Room enough to seat three or three child seats?

yep room enough for three child seats in the back.. looking at the Picasso alright would really like one of them, never in one but they seem great.

...sorry, but you're wasting you're time looking at anything in that class if you want 3 baby seats in a row.

...but that doesn't mean you have to buy an SUV. Think Peugeot SW or Toyota Verso's - but yes, that's 3 rows of seats.

5 seat Verso won't do the trick (these are the only ones that will be in price range)

Something like a Mitsubishi Chariot 2.0D would be the best bet IMO. (safety would be 90's style though)

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

What kind of child seats? In my experience 2 high back booster seats plus one full size child seat (either front or rear facing) will fit in most D-class saloons (Avensis, Vectra, etc.). At a push maybe even in some C-class small family hatches (Octavia, Golf, etc.)

    Try before you buy!

I've seen a couple of renault Scenic's I know you used to have one TT, what are they like reliability wise (00 - 03), safety would have to be high as it would be used on country roads, we've already had our Honda accord written off by a truck recently enough so it has to be factored in.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,413 ✭✭✭HashSlinging

Never even thought of that type of car unkel, reason being we found the accord ('00) would only take two (large booster and full size) with very little in between.

Just seen this, would be very happy with it for 400 euros, and if I had to spend a little to get it through an NCT then cool.

...had 3 in fact. If I could sell my 9-3, I'd go and get another one tbh....but you won't get 3 full size baby seats across in the rear. Actually, they won't fit in a Galaxy, either....

Reliability ? Only ever had one issue when the miles got high: ignition coils. I'd just treat it as consumable, tbh, and you can get a set of 4 now for......Eur 50 ? (4 plugs for a TT cost more than that !!).

Very nippy in the 1.4 16v format - 95bhp, and got about 38-40mpg out of it most of the time. Good value, tbh.........

If that passes the NCT with little/no spend, then it's a bargain. Crikey, if it only lasted 2 months it'd owe you nothing !!

If you could get a reasonably priced one, a Focus C-Max?

They're meant to tow the line between handling/ride quality very keenly...

Once again, it depends on the seats. Try it and see.

HashSlinging, I know it does not fit all your criteria and not the best driving experience in the world but would you consider a Zafira.

EDIT: The 2.0 diesel is a bit above your 1.6 limit but has much better MPG than the other petrols.

Had a 2L D Zafira on holidays, although i didn't drive it myself, my dad said, bar a Lada, it was probably the most annoying, bad feeling car he had ever driven.
Every one to their own though, i guess.

I have never driven one but they get quite good reviews and are very practical for family's.
