Pause in the boot-up

Funny little problem, This has happened to me on every Linux I have installed (a grand total of three).

Once it is fully installed, and working the boot-up pauses at this stage sometimes, and the stage just before this (when the bar bounces accross and back) everytime. The bootup can be re-kickstarted by pressing any key, and holding it

I was wondering if this is normal, and if it can be easily resolved. Other than this it works fine on my PC.

    Details:
    Ubuntu on a dell desktop
    Ubuntu on a hp laptop
    Mint on a hp laptop

Doesn't sound normal at all. Edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file and remove 'quiet' and 'splash' from the default boot option (usually the first one). There will be a line "default n" which will tell you which one is default and it starts numbering at 0.

Then reboot and you'll see exactly what it's doing at the time it pauses.

Take a backup of menu.lst first of course.

What version of ubuntu/mint are you using?

I remember I'd a similar problem with my HP laptop (DV 2000 range) on Ubuntu 7.x or 8.x. I think it's a problem with the kernel. Using 9.04 now with no issue.

Perhaps you could try the suggestion in this bug report (to specify "nolapic" option to grub).

Yep, these type of problems are normally related to ACPI and APIC.

I've finally had a chance to sit down and try and sort the problem.

I've got as far as to try and follow the instructions layed out here:

    http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/2009.0_Errata#Boot_pauses_indefinitely_at_various_points_until_a_key_is_pressed

But I can't find the boot configuration control, and I can't seem to create and save a blacklist-mdv file within the modprobe.d file. I've tried using gedit, and also vi (Wow - I'll be sticking as far away from that as possible!) But It wouldn't permit me to save the file.

Sorry for all the questions - I do appreciate the advice! :)

Edit: am using latest version of Mint
