PS3 Questions

Now that the PS3 slim and its new price has been announced I am seriously considering picking one up in September and I'm hoping some board members here could help me with some questions I have.

Firstly does the PS3 work as an upscaling DVD player and if so does it do a good job?

Secondly how does the PSN and XMedia Bar compare to XBLA and the Dashboard? I dont own a 360 but I have seen XBLA in action and I reckon its pretty slick, does the PS3 do a similarly good job?

Finally if you could recommend only one disk game and one downloaded game for PS3 what would they be?

    Thanks Guys!

I have a couple of questions too. The dual shock 3, that has the same motion sensing stuff as the six axis right, only with rumble?

How long do installs and updates take. Say for example, I buy the Slim and Killzone 2, how long from turning on the console to playing the game? I heard that firmware 3.0 won't ship with the Slim, so take that into account too.

Yeah I think it does really well. Wont be a problem :)

Haven't used XBLA but I think PSN is good and sure its free anyway! Media Bar is ok, minor upgrade in firmware 3.0 and You won't be able to install Linux on the slim PS3.
Finally if you could recommend only one disk game and one downloaded game for PS3 what would they be?

    Thanks Guys!

    Yes +

Depends on how big the update is,It might take a few minutes, you've waited all these years for a PS3,and ya wanna know how it'll take ya before you're playing a game :pac: :pac:

    - DVD up-scaling works a treat.

    - The NXE (360) is kind of based from the XMB (PS3). The whole cross design.

    - Disk based game: Uncharted.
    - PSN game: Fat Princess.

Firmware updates usually take about 3 minutes. Game updates vary. Everybody's golf 5 took about 20minutes, but that's a rarity.

Edit: Could a mod please remove my signature? I added it a few years ago when I joined, but now I don't have the post count to remove it myself. Thanks.

Thats great guys, thanks a million.

I'm particulalry interested in Downloadable games, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Fat Princess etc, do people think the PSN (or XBLA for that matter) has delivered in this area?

Yes, you have Fat Princess, Wipeout HD, Battlefield 1943 and so much more. Its a great addition to the ps3.

i have both consoles these are the pros and cons

    Xbox pros
Hmmm not much the ps3 beats it in graphics
    Good menu system
    Achievements

    Xbox cons
    Must pay to play online
Very very noisey ( very noticable when you have the 2 to compare against)
Doesnt accept removeable memory ie .. memory sticks

    Ps3 Pros
    Great graphics
    blu ray player
    free online play
    Great media bar
    Vidzone ( music video player)
Can install hdd up to 500gb
    Internet browser
    Trophies

    Ps3 cons
nearly every game has a required install these installs take up massive memory ie gta is 5 gb mgs is 6gb
When you receive a message you must go to a bit of trouble to read it compared to the 360

Id choose to play the ps3 over the xbox because its more simple to understand and OMG those 360 fans would drive anyone crazy

    Xbox pros
Hmmm not much the ps3 beats it in graphics
    (very true)
Good menu system (if you like ad's and content being pushed in your face) Hate the XBL and NXE but XBL is just cleaner so for me its better
    Achievements = trophies

    But for me:

    Xbox Pros:
    • Great online service, better servers and marrketplace updated quicker than PSN
    • Hard-drives are easier to swap out for me
    • Wondows Media Centre hook up
    Xbox Cons:
    • Failure Rate
    • XBL cost
    • Noisy
    • Cost of accessories (and microsoft's wireless tax if that's still going) is ridiculous, 120gb hard-drive and a wi-fi adapter can easily cost you 200 (when they are free in the PS3 slim)
    • First Party Exclusives aren't as good as PS3 for me
    • Power Brick!
    • Avatars look tacked on
    PS3 Pros:
    • You get pretty much everything you need, wi-fi, hard-drive, HDMI guaranteed (unlike the xbox)
    • Better First Party exclusives
    • Better (and simpler) menu system
    • More open than the 360, eg you can use any number of Media Streamers, install other os's (on Pre-Slims) and more movie formats
    • Swappable hard-drives upto 500gb (might be more on the slim)
    • Playstation Store originals are better for me (Wipeout HD/Fat Princess > Castle Crashers for me.
    • Use of any headsets, controllers (for Rock Band ect.) that aren't licensed by sony.
    PS3 Cons:
    • Music is hard to organize
    • Store is slower to get updated than the XBL Marketplace
    • The ''info bar''/''whats new'' bar is useless.
    • Installs are ok, I don't mind if it affects the game load times, but on Multi-Platform games, and there's no noticeable difference then its unacceptable.
    • GAME PATCHES are ridiculous, I spent a full evening (6pm-2am) waiting for Burnout Paradise to install and update patches. Even Noby Noby Boy, 300mb download-500mb patch! Why sell a game on the PS Store thats not patched, surely you can sell the game already fixed with patch included. Seriously annoying!
I bought both a 360 and a PS3, i'd play the PS3 anyday over the 360, for me I just don't feel like i'm being ripped off when i buy a playstation. 360 is full of hidden costs, and im no fan of the NXE so buy a playstation!

Wow, this turned into a 360 vs PS3 thread fast. The guy just asked about dlc and wheter the PSN had delivered in that area.

I was pretty impressed that it was so restrained! And actually pretty helpful about which system is better at providing DLC.

Any way thanks again all for your help.
