hi, my mom is looking to buy a car. with an engine size of around 1.2
and with a budget of 3-4000.
i know you are going to recommend a ford fiesta but im not interested as they only have a 3 star safety rating and dont do great with mpg.

    what would your recommendation be?

    -peugeot 206?
    -seat ibiza?
    -renault clio?
    -suzuki swift?
    -opel corsa?

Yaris are great cars, I have been looking for one for past couple weeks, 5k being my limit, but havent had any luck with getting a fair price. Will probably look to a Micra now I think. Good luck with your buying.

New model swift should be decent.

yaris is quite powerful as 1 litres go. Its more powerful than a 1.2 ibiza or polo. Girlfriends driving one with big miles that 3 girls learned to drive in and never missed a beat. You wont get a new swift in budget but if you could stretch it. Mighty yokes. My sister has one and its like a little dinky to drive. Plenty go too

Ibiza or maybe the Clio (kinda the black sheep of the Renault family, as it doesn't suck). IMHO the new Corsa is nice :)... but it and the new Swift should be a fair bit out of budget :(

    I would chellenge that comment!

I would recommend the new model Punto as a very good car in that category - nothing like the old one - actually nice to drive with the right engine & the interior (while basic) isn't too bad...

And your Mom does huge mileage?

Yaris are very cheap to run perfect for the city. About 23 mpg I think. Wouldn't be too keen on the rest of the models really apart from the fiesta.

no..?? its still a 3 star safety rating (as opposed to the clio, polo, 206, yaris etc ) that isnt as cheap to run as other superminis

I'd vote for the Clio, have an 04 for 2 1/2 years and never had a days trouble, lovely to drive and get 430+miles out of 40ltr tank. 500+ motorway miles.
I do lot of miles and its also a very comfortable car, and although boot isn't huge I still get kids and dogs and all equipment needed for a day at the beach in the car no prob.
Had Fiesta before this and Clio is miles better, also tried Yaris and while it is nippy its too small.

did u notice much of a power difference in the 1.2 clio than the 1 ltr yaris?

Not a lot, but the Clio feels more like it's going somewhere... sorry can't explain well.
Yaris didn't have much feel when driving and find if I change down and rev it the Clio can really go when over taking. Yaris less so.
Yaris also felt bit like a toy car and I feel safer in the Clio, its all down to personal likes and dislikes. When I go for new car I try several, Micra scared the bejaysus outta me! No feel and no acceleration for overtaking, didn't like it at all but a friend of mine loves the micra.

I'd go for a Fiesta. More room, cheaper to fix. The 1.25 is a little flyer. Or the 1.4 diesel, very economical, very few available secondhand, which is sign people want to hang on to them. French cars are just not made for Irish roads, and they will break your heart with sensors going faulty.

Keep away from the Opel Corsas. They are badly built and will cost you so much money. We got one new, straight away there was something wrong with the clutch, then something wrong with the seats, damaged engine....the list is endless. We took care of it so much, but it was just a money eater-everything going.

Ford Fiestas are the best-no question.

I've hears of a lot of corsa's having major engine problems, especially the new ones.

Ibiza's are fairly sound machines as there basically a VW

    Yaris' have typical Jap reliablity

Clio's are the best french car around IMO

Any of those 3 would be a pretty good option
