Hey guys, currently running windows vista on my two year old compaq presario and it's running unbearably slow. Have finally got a free weekend to save everything that needs saving, and format the flipping thing. Before I start, I have one question, I'm running an AMD Athlon 1.700GHz processor, have 958MB of RAM and a 150GB HD - do you recommend I just reinstall vista? Or change OS altogether?

I really want things to move smoothly again on a daily basis with my lappy. I have been trying absolutely everything to prolong the format - spent one day defragging, checking for spyware/viruses/errors, removing background programs, start up progs, etc etc, but this is going to have to be done!

Vista is a beast for using ram I wouldn't be happy with less than 2gb for running it( and even then its a waste of resource), if you could install XP pro that would be my suggestion.

You could reinstall vista if you wanted. But if you are going to do that, do yourself a favour and buy 2Gbs of RAM. Vista will barely run on the 1Gb it's got now.
The increase of RAM will probably give you a large performance boost. A fresh reinstall of windows would also see things improve. If you have xp you could throw that on, or if you're willing to wait you could buy windows 7 in October.

Add more RAM and reinstall vista.

or keep the ~1gb and go with xp pro.

thanks guys very much for your speedy responses.

Would Windows 7 run smoother than xp pro on the gig of RAM I've got?

Buy more RAM before doing anything!

    Noted! Thanks

Sorry for bothering again, but what's the best place to buy some RAM? Just rang up a place in my town and they charge about €50 for a gig, €80 for two gigs. Not sure if that's the going rate?
