First time at races

    Hi All,
As you can see I'm a first time poster but will also be a first timer to the races when I head to Galway on Sat.
Just coming on to look for any advise/tips as I know very little about horse racing/betting. Have placed a bet before but only to win or place, so no idea what a Yankee, multiplier and accumulator are?

    Thanks for any advise.

Haven't seen the card yet for Sat, so don't have any fancies. Lads will probably throw up a few selections on the day of the races, so maybe check before you head off.

don't worry too much about Yankee's, etc for a day at the races. Just pick a horse you like in each race or some of the race and back it on its own. You can either use the tote or go to the bookmakers. The tote don't guarantee prices (ie you won't know what price your horse is until the race is over - although you'll have a rough idea) and you can do various bets there like placepot (picking a horse to be placed in first six races), jackpot (picking winner of four races), forecast (picking first/second home in a race), etc.

The bookmakers are really for the bigger gambler. Some have a minimum amount that you have to bet (like 5 or 10 euro), so check that out first if you bet with them.

for the bigger fields, think about going each way with your bets (normally first 3 home but can be first 4 in bigger fields).

There are loads of different types of multiplier bets. For example a Yankee is where you pick 4 horses and you have eleven different bets going on (4 doubles, 6 trebles and a fourtimer). Basically you need 2 to win to collect anything. Accums are where you pick a certain amount of horses and they all have to win to collect (normally better with a lot of short priced horses). As I said, forget about these for the day and just enjoy it and remember to gamble sensibly :)
