Where to stay on the Amalfi Coast

I'm looking for advice on where to base ourselves for a 3 night stay on the Amalfi Coast. There are 6 of us, and we are thinking a hotel is probably the best option due to our short stay. We will be attending a wedding in Ravello, and spending 4 nights there, and we have 3 more nights afterwards to see somewhere else. We would like somewhere with restaurants, not too quiet, with a bit of life. Amalfi town or Positano, or other?

Also would you recommend hiring a car? I've heard that its a nightmare to drive over there.

Thanks so much, appreciate any advice going!

Hey - I'm just back from Amalfi coast. Stayed in Sorrento and Praiano and then headed further south. My main points would be:

    1) Capri is a waste of time - expensive, no more scenic than mainland and generally overrated.

    2) Sorrento is nice - touristy mind you. For restaurants the best (possibly best ever??) is La Vela Bianca down near the port. Also, Donna Sofia was great.

    3) Positano was contrived. Spectacular setting but you really feel the place only exists for the tourist trade. Had poor over priced food and got the feeling everyone is just trying to extract your hard earned from you.

    4) Praiano is great. Quiet and not much going on but really genuine and a bit off the beaten track. The restaurant there Il Pino was v good and great value. Much preferred it to Positano.

    5) Hiring a car - we hired one and had a great time. Driving is fine, you just need to be confident and have good spatial reasoning as the roads are narrow. But I say go for it we had no problems. Plus taxis and public transport in general is a bit crap.

    Hope that helps!

Positano is still rather lovely, though. If you opt to stay there, Villa Rosa is very beautiful with fantastic views from the balconies. Capri is really only worth a day trip to see the Blue Lagoon.

    Enjoy!
