Online map that has Irish names

OpenStreetMap is a free wiki map of the world. It aims to do to Google Maps what Wikipedia did to encyclopedia. People have been adding Irish place names to it. So instead of 'Dublin' the map would say 'Baile Átha Cliath'. Someone has put together a full online fancy map, showing all the names in irish

The data is taken from OpenStreetMap: http://www.openstreetmap.org/index.html

As you can see it has the same style, but it uses the 'main language' in each place. If you create an account there, you can edit away. The OSM wiki has more info: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Main_Page.

Important: You can't copy from Google Maps / Ordanance Survey maps. You can go there and see the name of the street, or use your own local memory. The wiki has more info.

I presume you want to add an Irish name to an existing street. Here's a quick guide to what to do:

Go to openstreetmap.org and zoom into the area in question. Press the Edit tab on top of page, this will bring you into the Potlatch editor. You'll need to create an account to edit the map.

Click on the street/way you want to edit.

On the bottom of the screen you will see the properties of the way, which are collections of key and value pairs. These are called tags.

eg:
key value
###############
highway pedestrian
name Grafton Street

You want to add a new tag so click on the '+' button inbotton right hand side
type in name:ga (which is the key for Irish names) and the street name in irish

name:ga Sráid Grafton

Repeat for other streets. Press save and enter a brief comment.
So all that the map on cassini website is doing is creating maptiles using name:ga values if they exist rather than the name value.

In Gaelacht areas, you might want to give precedent to the Irish name so this is what the name tags usually mean:

name -> default name used locally
name:ga -> Irish name
name:en -> English name

So you could add all three name tags

Yeah I've heard that from someone. Apparently "open source" is "foinse oscailte".

Someone else has pointed out that the Dutch for OSM is OSM, the German for OSM is OSM, etc :P
