Android phones

A guy at work got the HTC Hero and it is the ideal phone for me (must ask him though if it has a radio). However, the price tag leaves it out of reach. I am excited to hear that HTC are working on an entry-level Android phone, called the HTC Click.

What I will probably do is wait until I am ready for a new phone (I only upgraded to my LG Viewty a few months ago so I'm locked in for a bit) and then see what deals the Irish networks have for Androids. If there aren't any, I'll go and get a SIM-free phone myself.

Other advantages to waiting is that Android 2.0 will be bedded in by then. Also, there should be more phones out there running Android at lower prices -- Samsung have one already, as do a few others.

The thing is, it's gotta be Android for me. Why? Well the main reason is the simple Google integration -- especially push-Gmail. I use Gmail and Google Calendar (and Docs and Chat) everyday. I want a Wifi-enabled phone that will let me do this with no fuss.

    What do you all say?

I assume it's the HTC Hero rather than the G1 you're referring to, neither have a radio. I love radio but I was willing to overlook it for the Hero; that is, until I heard about being unable to buy apps from the app store. I think Android has massive potential, but until they get the store sorted I'll be sticking with Nokia when the e72 arrives.

I am a long time Nokia user - S60 since the first phone (7650) and I recently moved to the HTC hero. I can overlook the lack of radio - it would have been nice but not a deal breaker for me. The UI is fanfastic compared to Symbian - its a fun phone to use and I must say I enjoy it a lot more than my previous E71.

I am a little pissed (ok a lot) at the lack of a google market here. I believe the problem is that Google hasn't got off its arse and done deals with operators here but we're not the only ones. Lots of other countries have been left out too.

That said there are not many paid apps that I really really have to have. I've installed a podcast player, chompsms, a todo list, a note app, a battery widget and power manager all from the market and right now that's all I need. Some application developers allow you to purchase from their web sites (and install from the browser on the handset) and this gets around the problem of the market.

I suspect that either Google will have to increase its market availability quickly or more and more application developers are going to bypass the market and go directly to the end user.

I know most people say that their latest handset "is the best I've ever had" but in this case (in my case) it is. I wouldn't go back to symbian for anything.

Did you have to pay for these?

Nope. There are lots (and lots) of free apps in the market.
