VW Golf Stick accelerator

    Hi,

My girlfriend recently purchased a 00 VW Golf (Petrol 1.4). There's about 90k miles on it but it seems to be in good nick except for one thing.

When in the lower gears, it's very difficult to smoothly balance off the clutch against the accelerator because the accelerator seems sticky.

It's as if the first bit of pressure on the accelerator has no effect, but it suddenly kicks in and the result is jerky acceleration through 1st and 2nd.

Just wondering if this is a symptom of an underlying problem, or a characteristic of a car this old with 90k miles.

    Opinions appreciated, thanks!

Is the pedal itself sticking, or does it feel as though the engine is not responding in a linear fashion?

If you leave the engine in neutral, does it hesitate in the same way?

You sure it's not the clutch that's sticking?

Did she buy the car with this problem or did it develop after? Did she buy it from a dealer, does it have a 3 month warranty? If so bring it back and get it sorted.

Sounds like a dirty throttle body - common enough for a 1.4 VW of that vintage. Easy enough to fix and won't cost a lot if you don't have the luxury of a warranty.
