My first ever game of golf, and subsequent games, were in Fermoy Golf Club. That's going back 20 years, but I was there recently for a look around and it looks more or less the same. I honestly couldn't tell you how much of a challenge it is now as it's been a long time since I was there but it looked nice and has great views as it's halfway up a hill.

Mitchelston is a full 18 now.....not spectacular but okay...kept well...nice atmosphere in the place...Fermoy is well established now bit hilly..kept well...Mallow is plain...

Mitchelstown is a nice course, pretty tight but short. They have 6 new holes which are just totally different than the other 12.

Mallow is a very nice course with incredible greens (played Fred Daly Munster Final there on Monday, greens were the best I've ever putted on). You're very rarely left with a flat stance, ball is either above you or below you. It's not a very long course, but it has 5 par 5's, all reachable in 2 with good drives.

Fermoy, never really like the course. It's on the side of a mountain. It's a long enough course iirc with 2 totally different nines.

Kanturk is an OK course. Again, it's pretty tight. Every single green in the same - upside down saucer. Very hard greens to read and hold with ****s into.

Charleville - I'm going to be pretty bias here because i'm a member here. But imo, it has great facilities and you can always go out for casual golf. 27 holes. It has a driving range, a chipping green, a putting green, a great pro shop (only cos i work there :p ). The 18 hole course is extremely tight with loads of doglegs. It's a very short course with small greens. Greens are very old and only have a few years left in them, however when the greens are double cut, they are really quick. Has some very challenging holes and I think has one of the best finishing holes in the country. The 9 holes course is very open, but it is pretty long. The greens are all new and sand-based and should be very nice in a few years.

    Hope that helps.

Mitchelstown is nice for the old 12 holes but is hard to enjoy as it is broken up with the 6 new and totally different holes. Need to hit the ball a long way on the new holes and they just feel out of place imo. The drainage was not the best on the new 6 the last time i played either. Worth a trip if its dry but stay clear if its wet.

I agree wholeheartedly with the comments about the 'outside' six holes at Mitchelstown. They're an odd beast compared with the others, but you get a great look at the Galtees. Some of the inner holes (4, 12 and 13) are brilliant, and it's a very level piece of ground with the river running through it

Fermoy - yes it's hilly (back 9 especially) but it's a good golf course and worth a visit if you don't mind the climbing.

Niall09 makes an excellent case for Charleville and I'd agree - it's short and tight but extremely pleasant and, seemingly, effortless. Niall, say hi to Pat Nagle for me.

Kanturk is pleasant and simple, but the greens have been accurately described and are very tricky.

Mallow is a good track. I prefer the front 9 (less of the sloping lies that Niall09 refers to).

If you're looking in that neck of the woods, Ballykisteen is not too far away

Thanks for the reply's guys.. I'm a member in Mitchelstown with 9 or 10 years now.. I just wanted to know what visiting players thought of it compared to other courses..
I agree with the new 6 holes being a bit out of sorts. They will be better in years to come when the trees mature. Drainage is a big problem over there.

I played Charleville with a society 2 weeks ago.. The greens were lightening quick compared to what I'm used to.. Not much room for mistakes either with all the mature trees..

What are you guys all playing off?

    Cheeky!

Definitely, when I played in the Munster Boys in Mitchelstown last year, all the fairways were heavily drained and sanded - wasnt very pleasant.

I'd agree with Kevin's assessment. If I were joining a club in north Cork I'd be torn between Mallow and Charleville. prob. Charleville tbh

I haven't played Mitchelstown since the disgraceful state of the course in the JSC last year. The outside 6 was like playing out of a bunker they were so heavily sanded. Was level par heading out there and 10 over crossing back over. My h'cap is 7

And in future just ask what visitors think instead of misrepresenting yourself.

    @Jason

    How was I misrepresenting myself?

I think what he means is how you failed to mention how you were a member in the op, I wouldn't worry too much about it. you didn't do anyone any harm. You never know, if people knew you were a member there they might have not been as honest.
Played there myself 2-3 months ago and really enjoyed the place but I must say the back 6 were kind of annoying as they were so bare but that is just youth and they were just after sanding holeing the fairways a few days before it so that put a downer on them but overall very nice course.
