In fairness, the journalists were hardly in a position to examine evidence for themselves in this case. I'd say they couldn't do much more than report what they were told by the authorities to be fact or suspected fact.

I do belive there is a major issue here though. Count the amount of press releases trotted out as news on TV and radio today. Its amazing to hear some of the free publicity affored to some organisations or individuals seeking to further their own cause

Swine flu is another classic. I gave it 3 weeks to be a non-story when it first emerged, its dragged on a bit. When I say a bit, I mean individuals and business up and down the country in a blind panic installing hand cleaners and offering no-questions-asked-sick-leave to anyone with a sniffle (I'm planning on having suspected swine next tuesday week, friends wedding to go to)
The point with this one though, is that there is plently of freely available and very reliable (peer reviewed) data out there that can and should be researched which would highlight the massive over-reaction by, for one, journalists. Reporting that people are 'fearful' over the 'epidemic' is just part of the natural course of events as created by the news media. Instil fear, then report on it.

To go back to the press release churned out as news. The TV, radio, print etc journalists that put this crap out there should be ashamed.
Stop acting as a mouthpiece and do some work for gods sake.

True, but they didn't make as much of a deal when the found out that there were no bodies in the home.

    I think they think Fear = Audience/Readers.

Swine Flu has been blown out of proportion in a similar way that MMD Vaccines caused Autism.

Why bother researching a story when you can just post up any old crap that people will read and provide a knee jerk reaction from without confirming the source, of course the average joe won't bother confirming stuff because they believe the journalist has done this.

After all its part of their job isn't it? :)
