Hi all. I am currently a member of An Garda Síochana and I am seriously thinking of applying for the PSNI. I am hoping to get some advice on this from anyone that may help, especially if there is someone out there that has made the same move in the past. Am i mad? Thank you in advance.

hi Dj. I have a few years service under my belt. I have a number of reasons for my wanting to change but one of my major reasons would be the lack of challenge. I have A number of good friends in the PSNI and i admire the work they do. are you polis?

    Unfortunately i am :D

Depending on what part of the country your in, you could apply for a more challenging unit rsu, eru, etc etc.

You could apply for peacekeeping, promotion

If its what you want then id go for it.
At the end of the day it doesnt matter what anyone on here says.... you the one that has to make your mind up and live with the decision.

There are others on this board such as P.S.N.I ( moderator ) who can give much better advice than me but my two cents worth is that I saw on another recent thread elsewhere in the ES Forum a comment by P.S.N.I that he knew a number of former GS members who had made the switch to the P.S.N.I and felt it was the best move they ever made but he also cautioned that he was aware of Gardai who failed to even make it past the first hurdle - the Initial Selection Test. Like I said there are others here far better equipped to speak than me !

    Hi VictorRolf.

It's true. I do know quite a few Gardaí who made the move for a variety of reasons, and none of them have looked back.

As you can see from the tone of some of the replies (which are now deleted), there are a small minority who will drag up the past, and magnify public order incidents for their own agenda. Ignore them. The service needs people from all parts of the island to reflect the communities it serves, but it's not as easy as you might think to get in.

You're always going to get the stories of poor wee Johnny who went to buy a pint of milk, took a wrong turn on his wee bike and ended up on the front line of a wee riot.

The PSNI (not RUC) are not recruiting until next year, and vetting for us ROI natives takes around a year, so if you do decide to give it a go, you'll need nerves of steel.

Feel free to ask as many questions as you like.

I have to admit I'm conflicted when I read posts like this!

Part of me feels bad that someone with relevant experience has to jump through the same hoops and do the same waiting as the rest of us.

On the other hand, everyone has to jump through the same hoops and do the same waiting so it is at least democratic!

A transfer would be amazing, i wonder if that would be an option in the future?

I think it will be when 50/50 is scrapped but then again thats just guessing! Good luck with whatever you decide to do !

when 50/50 is scrapped there will be nowhere near as many posts being filled, they will only fill jobs that have been vacated that previous year. I would therefore imagine that you won't be able to transfer from one force to another without having to go through the whole recruitment process like everyone else.... though i think if you are ranked sergeant or above the rules for transfer are slightly different if you wish to transfer into the psni from another force.

It's in the policing plan 09-11. They recruit 440 this year, 150 next year and approx 50 per year thereafter. I think thats the correct numbers but don't take it as gospel as it's been a while since I read it.

The last of the early severance scheme is April 2010 if I'm not mistaken.

so roughly if 10000 applies every year. This year you need to be in top 4.4%. Next year top 1.5% and the year after 0.5%. Now roll the laughing if I've calculated this wrong. Tough numbers if right tho

p.s. know this doesn't take into account 50/50, just rough numbers

yep that's right. So no need to panic but for most of us this year is sort of the last shot :(

the numbers are tough although it is the PSNI so they've another year to change everything and in my opinion they rarely stick to what they originally say.

CRIKEY PRETTY SLIM ODDS!!!! i do hope they dont stick to what they originally said for our sake.

Why is it the last shot for most of ye though?

any ex-gardaí who joined the PSNI want to share their story/experiences/positives/negatives?

Transfers are possible within the Patton Exchange programme, from what I have read Insp or above can transfer between the two, Sgt can transfer up to 3 years with full powers, Garda can transfer up to one year with no power. Although there was a report this year recommending that the full transfers are made available to Garda and Constables as the higher ranks where not availing of this opportunity.

Waiting to apply for the GS and looked into if it would be worth my while to apply to the PSNI if I could transfer across after a few years. By the looks of it a full transfer may be possible in the near future.
