Anyone know what this movie is

    I think it was out on vhs around 1980-85. I can see the main actors face but just cant place him in another film.
    The jist of the film is this guy in a endurance motorbike race across a desert somewhere down near Mexico. Not to far away scientist are doing an experiment where they are trying to send a monkey back in time in a capsule. Just as they hit the go switch the motorcyclist goes through the area and gets sent back in time himself. The time he is sent back to is wild west time.
    Anyone have any ideas
