First Crash

    Just back from the A&E.

Kids... dont cycle over wet rail crossings at the bottom of hills at 40km/h.

My left hood is bent in, I hope its repairable. I would love to know how my chain came off in the crash though.

Also to add to the helmet debate. The only sound I can remember from the crash was the krrrrkrkrkrkrkrkrkrkrkrkr noise of my helmet scraping along the road (my "head brake" as I like to call it now). I wouldnt like to have seen my condition if I didnt have it.
Mental note - Remember to add new helmet to purchase list.

Sorry to hear. A&E .. did you get hurt? Just road rash? get better, greasy roads are not good ...

Glad to hear you are ok.

I went to A&E because I couldnt bend my knee. I am covered in road rash. I cant remember what parts of me hit the hardest but I guessed the knee. Nothing broken, just sprains and bruises and missing skin. Plus I need a new jersey.

Its a busy road, but only one person stopped. That guy was brilliant, gave me a lift home and everything. Thank you mystery fellow.

I just hope my bike is ok for the Sean Kelly. Just got my number today.

greasy roads are not good ...

It was actually wet metal that did me in. My front and back wheels were on different tracks at the same time I think, both went sideways.

I'm still in 'rehab' after hitting the deck in a race 16 weeks ago tomorrow night  I did some serious damage to my left knee, which took the full impact of the crash. My physio reckons it will be the start of November at the earliest before I can resume any meaningful training.

My advise would be to try and put the crash out of mind/don't dwell on it. It's easier said than done, I know. I found it did affect my confidence on the bike. Get back on the bike as soon as possible, try to not sit around at home mulling it over in your head.

And of course never make the same mistake again :)

Sounds like what happened to me :(

If you can get your hands on 'Adaptic' it's great for road rash. I don't know if its available in chemists. My wife's a nurse and has 'access' to it. Failing that, rub vaseline onto gauze (spelling?) and put that on the cuts. Either of the above will keep the cuts moist and the pain bearable. I think it keeps the air away from the cuts too which helps the stinging.

Every item of clothes I was wearing were cut or torn except my shorts, which survived. My shoes were scuffed to bits as well

Wasn't at the O2 (Point) by any chance, heard of a few cyclists coming a cropper there. (I know there's no hill but I can't think of a level crossing in Dublin with a hill on it except maybe Cardiff Bridge or Ashtown)

A friend of mine broker her arm at the roundabout at the point. There was an election poster on the ground and she slipped on it. Broke her forearm and scrapped most of herself off the road!

    Get well soon Jumpy.
First crash for me too in Drogheda last Monday (11/8)
Roadworks on Dublin Rd near flogas, impatient line of traffic behind me so l moved closer to the kerb to let them pass.

Clipped kerb and landed hard on left shoulder, left knee and front left side of helmet.

Taken to A&E in an ambo and the result is a bloody knee, 2" cut over left eye (from helmet absorbing impact) and shoulder bones that are crushed "like an eggshell" so arm in a sling for 6 weeks minimum.
l'd say the time between me leaving the saddle and my head whacking the ground was less than a second so if l'd no helmet on, my skull might have been the eggshell.
Pi$$ed off 'cos l was out doing 20k every day since l got the bike (just starting back after 8 yrs off the road)
Bike ok, helmet, shirt and jacket need replacing.
Between recovery and physio, you might not see me back on the road for 3 months - VERY frustrating 'cos l just want to get back on the horse.
Also will have some psychological s**t to deal with, regarding fear of falling on the shoulder again but hopefully will get over that.

Lets be careful out there oh and next time...l ain't moving over, they can f'ing wait!! tongue.gif

    Wait wtf?

Just had a good look at the bike now.

All the damage to me is on my right side. All the damage to the bike is on the left side.

This makes no sense whatsoever. I must have flipped in the air.

Getting back on the bike after a break and a break can be tough. I broke a thumb last october, the following saturday i was on a spin with my splint and road rash, but it was ok, not scary.

6 weeks after this break, I broke my wrist, was off the bike for 8 weeks, and the day i got the cast off I attempted a ride down the estate on my fixie and that was quite scary... it took me a few weeks of one hour here and there and only on the fixie to get the strengh back. The day I got back on the road bike I was so apprehensive ... I couldn't properly handle the bike, but after a couple of hours and 120 or so KM, I was fine again, but my confidence, especially in the rain and on descents took a while to come back. I am still terrified of Icy roads ...

The longer you leave it, the hardest it will be to get the confidence back, but you do eventually.

I almost cycled into a hedge this evening in our race. Took a corner way too fast and ran very wide. It was close.

The rails are at an angle to the road there aren't they?

I've driven that road more than I've cycled it, but either way it's the first bit of road out of town where you can get a bit of speed up.

Sorry to hear about the crash. Get well soon, and all the best for the SK. Which distance are you doing?
All the damage to me is on my right side. All the damage to the bike is on the left side.
Did you come down on top of the bike?

I dont know where I came down, cant remember anything but the noises.

Those are at a very bad angle to the road. They make no provision for a bike crossing them at all.

EDIT: Sorry, doing the 100k if my knee will move in the next week :)

Hope you are feeling better quickly.

Sounds like you fell one way, and the bike fell the other.

I got back on the turbo about a week after my accident (fortunately no broken bones to worry about, although I still had dressings on my face, arm and knee), and was on the road a couple of weeks later. I can still get a bit apprehensive before going out, but when I am on the bike I am absolutely fine (although I do take particular care at the accident spot!). In my view the best you can do is try and get back on the bike as soon as you feel fit.

What helmet do you have? If it is an expensive one may be worth seeing if the manufacturer has a crash replacement programme, many do where they will replace a damaged helmet at a substantial discount. I wrote off my own Giro Atmos in a nasty crash on Saturday, ironically I reckon head would not have contacted tarmac had I not been wearing the helmet, and I would have avoided nasty neck twisting injury! Giro are replacing it for £65 which is half RRP I think and well below even web prices. I have heard some other manufacturers may do them even cheaper.

Good to hear you weren't too badly dinged up and hopefully you'll make a quick recovery.

    [war story]

I did my right collarbone a couple of years ago (ice) and made a point of getting on the bike again as quickly as possible - 3 days after I did the right collarbone I hit some oil or diesel on a corner and did my left collar bone - I was like bloody King Tut with my arms immobilised!!!

"Thankfully" because it was winter I was wearing a lot of gear so didn't suffer any road rash, apart from a few very minor scratches.

First time two drivers stopped to help - the second time no one stopped and a couple even blew their horns at me as I was sprawled in the road. Went to go for a taxi (mini-bus) to get the bike home before heading to A&E and the driver refused to take me even though I was clearly hurt.

Two of my brothers came out to help - 1 to take the bike, the other to take me to A&E. The only thing worse than the crash was listening to the slagging from them!

Once the arms got better I made it my business to do my first cycle on the bike on a route that took in both accident sites - although I was still quite cautious about heading into the particular corners at speed!

    [/war story]

    Speedy recovery Jumpy!

BUT...don't rush back too soon if there is damage to your knee etc.!

You'll regret it in the long run :(

    Peter (with knackered knees!)

Jumpy, FWIW there are a couple of us walking wounded doing the 50km SK due to injuries, so as long as your bike is OK you can limp round with us.

On the tour of Louth I came hockeying down the side of that bloody mountain.Took a bend in the mist and damp WAAAYYYYYY too fast. Managed to keep it in the middle of the road. Back wheel kicked out foot came off the pedal started to lose control.then a car appeared right on the bend and it was a brown stain moment for both me and the car.Millimetres was all there was between us. I could have sworn I saw the grim reaper cursing as he flew away.

@ op. If you have a turbo. As soon as you can bend the knee comfortably get on it.

I know that strech of road very well. One of the busiest roads out of Limerick. Not nice that only one person stopped - fair play to that person.

    Get well soon.

In as much as it's a credit to the one person who stopped to help , it's a sad reflection on today's society that other people chose to ignore a clearly hurt cyclist . It happened to me a couple of years ago , slid along the ground on a sharp bend , crashing into a wooden fence on a remote road . An early morning walker (hadn't seen another person for miles) passing within feet of me just passed by , head down without so much as " alright there?" .......wasn't looking for a lift home or anything , just an acknowledgement of my plight. Still have a mental picture of the b****rd , hope I come across him sometime in a distressed state .

I understand at least 2-3 cars pulled-up at the scene of my accident. At least one more stopped to phone an ambulance, and someone else took my bike for me. I therefore have nothing but praise for the commuters of North County Dublin.

I do think the pace of life in town is a little different, and people do tend to leave these things to someone else, which as Deisetrek says, is a bit of a sad reflection on society

Its an El Cheapo Bell Venture. I dont think they have replacement schemes.
I will check it out though.
