avoiding VRT - moving to Ireland

    Hello

I live abroad but not in the UK.

If I was moving to Ireland in July 2010 can I purchase a car in UK six months before I return and leave in storage over there. I have a brother in law who can take care of this me. Then when I return bring this car which I have technically owned for 6 months into Ireland and avoid VRT. The only snag is that I am not a resident of UK.

    Would this work?

So you won't be living or resident in the UK, but you hope that storing a car in the UK will allow you to be exempt from VRT?

It doesn't sound likely to me...

    Where do you live ?

You need to prove residency in the UK if you're bringing it from there. You need proof of address and to be paying tax there and have the equivelant of a pps number there.
You could Reg the new car where ever you are actually living and bring it from there.

thanks everyone. I wrote the question half expecting that this is not possible. Bringing a car back from where I live is not a good option - too far and left hand drive. Do not want to me messing with all of that.

Returning is costing a fortune so was just trying to save a few bob on a car!

I still may get the car in UK and bring over anyway. Are there any issues with UK cars and everything being in miles rather than KM?

Can you not buy a RHD car where you are and ship it back after 6 months? The saving on VRT should overcome the hassle of driving on the wrong side of the car for a while :D

Would really help if you told us where you are living OP.

    Sorry - USA

RHD car would be a impossible to find here. I own two nice motors here that I will be selling but could bring one home but driving in Ireland with a LHD sounds like a nightmare.

No, as stated you'll need to be able to prove you were resident in the UK.

You could bring a classic home from the US, one that never sold in RHD form? A lad I know brought home a 1980 Camaro Z28 (top speed according to the speedo: 85 mph! LOL)

I have just been finding out about bringing a car over from UK. What is said above is correct. This blog lays out in detail what you need to do to prove you have been in UK . http://www.co2.ie/blog/?p=119.

IMHO you'll find better information than that if you Google for a while - it doesn't even look like they've finished writing/proof-reading that post...

If you're thinking of importing from the UK, read this thread. If you have any questions about it, post them in that thread - this isn't a thread about importing from the UK as a UK resident.

    Hi Chris,
Yes that was very good for if you are forced into paying the VRT. However, I really do live in the UK a lot of the time and pay tax there, so I do not see why I should have to pay it. The car will have been owned by me for 6 mths and I want to spend a bit more of my time in Ireland. I do not want to be harrassed by the Guards for having English number plates, so that link was ideal for finding out what proof you need for exemption. I thought that was what that guy needed to know.

Also now I need to find out what happens in Uk when I am driving around with Irish number plates.... I plan to spend plenty of time in uk as well and I can't afford 2 cars.

Well, from your information you obviously qualify for exemption from VRT. I was pointing you to a very detailed thread that would give all the ins and outs of doing it. You can use whatever source of information you consider valid, but I have a lot of faith in the good advice in the boards thread I linked to.

The problem is that the OP isn't in the UK and is not tax resident there, so the link you posted is of no help, nor is the link I posted.
I was trying to help you without derailing the OP's thread.

Also now I need to find out what happens in Uk when I am driving around with Irish number plates.... I plan to spend plenty of time in uk as well and I can't afford 2 cars.

AFAIK you can just register your car in the UK - it costs a few hundred quid. They give you a reg plate.
You hang on to your ROI reg number and if you ever repatriate your car you just put your ROI number back on your car with no fees or paperwork.

You won't be, if you're a UK resident. The way the enforce VRT is that it's illegal for an Irish resident to drive a foreign registered car in Ireland. If you have a UK address, and can prove this to the Guards, you're fine - you're just on holidays or whatever. I think you can keep the car in the country up to 12 months at a time now, not sure about that though, it might be just 6.

As far as I can remember Skyline GT-R's only sold in RHD(original ones not the new Nissan GT-R) but of course they may not be the kind of car you are looking for. Other wise I would go with the previous suggestion of a classic muscle car.
