Problems with external drive

    :(
Got back from holidays to find my external hard drive (WD MyBook WD10000H1CS-00) making this sound (buzz then a beep, repeated constantly). The white light at the front is lit up, sometimes moves left and right. Nothing shows up in Windows.

It doesn't feel like the drive is spinning, I wonder if it's only the electronics in the enclosure malfunctioning?

The drive is under warranty until 2011. However, I don't think they recover your data, just send you back a new blank drive.

Should I try to open it up (thus probably voiding warranty) and see if I can plug it into my pc directly?

Is anyone able to diagnose the problem from the sound?

You have 2 open it up and place the hard drive it in a sata or ide caddy .THE cable or internal interface board is either faulty ,has a short circuit ,or there s a loose connection somewhere .Google install hard drive in caddy enclosure ide or sata .GOOGLE image sata ide interface to figure out what type of caddy you need.IF dropped theres a chance the the hd is damaged .DO NOT touch the hd or caddy pcb board at any point.Take static precautions when holding the hardrive.
SEARCH boards tech computers, this forum recover files sata drive 4 more info.IF data is IMPORTANT gently open it up, 1000gig drive cost is now eighty euro ie is the data worth eighty euro to you?YOU may need special screwdriver to open it ,try maplins.

Call them up tell them the problem. They have 2 deals afaik
1: you send them the drive they send you a new one
2: they send you a drive and you pay a deposit, you have x days to do data recovery and send the bad drive back or they'll keep the deposit.

I'd recommend not doing do ANYTHING that'll void the warrenty.
