Im going into first year in DCU and have applied for and been offered accomodation in both campus and Shanowen Square. The problem is I have no idea which one I should choose. Campus is a Hampstead 5-bedroom and Shanowen is a 4-bedroom. So what are the advantages nd disadvantages of both and which should I choose.

    All help appreciated, thanks.

    well,

Personally i have not lived in shanowen but have had experience in campus res. the apartments are really nice and its its great living so close too other students (tho this is an advantage of shanowen to).

Campus res can be strict, giving 4 room inspections throughout the year and enforcing fines if not up to standards.

If you wish for a friend to stay over night you need to give due notice. before midday. and pay an admin fine of 5 euro, a fine which is also enforced if u get locked out of your room and need to be let back in.

All that said, living on campus can be great craic, if you can try get the opinion of someone who has lived in shanowen u could make a good choice, but both have really nice facilities so you cant really go wrong regardless.

I lived in both Shanowen and Campus when I was college.
As said above in first year the best place is Campus. In Shanowen the walls are paper thin so you can hear everything, and if your unlucky with roommates you could be kept awake all night. The apartments themselves seemed to be thrown up as quick and as cheap as possible, although hampstead is hardly the ritz either. The internet on campus is jet fast but all the ports are closed for torrents etc, the internet in Shanowen was very dodgy at times but all the ports are open. On campus they will put you in with first years too whereas Shanowen you will be thrown in with whoever so its better for socialising definitely. The house inspections on campus can be a kick in the stones and I racked up quite a few fines for parties etc, but I would still choose campus.

for first year especially campus is the best option i think. I lived in hampstead in first year and everyone you live with is in first year so it is a lot easier to make friends etc. Plus the >3min walk to lectures aint half bad either!:P
