damn shin splints threatning to rule out first attempt at marathon. Just been told that if i run on road again I will definately not be able to do marathon. Been training 90% on grass since they started 8 weeks ago, but frank duffy 10 last week kinda made them worse (surprise surprise)
So the dilema is this, have to build up mileage now with marathon only 10 weeks away and dont fancy doing 20 miles running around in circles on grass.....
ever had shin splints?? do you know anwhere to do decent run off the roads around south dublin.
    thanks.

I suspect your body is trying to tell you something.

    Get to a physio

Postpone your race until issues are sorted

8 weeks is long enough , did they find the cause of the problem. Treatment helps the usualy stuff but after 8 week did the physio find the cause?

problem is probably due to car crash year ago in which i damaged my back, and is causing a bio mechanical issue. Sounds bit complicated, but poor calf flexibility is also contributing to issue, but you are right shels4ever in that the cause of the injury needs to be addressed as much as treating the injury itself so addressing the other issues also, fingers crossed im told that if i stay off the roads up to marathon i should be able to run the marathon...

Have you got gait tested because your runners mightnt be suiting you. I used to have awful problems with shin splints but got tested and was recommended a perfect pair of runners for me and havent had any problems since. Got it done in amphibianking (http://www.amphibianking.ie/) in Bray. Best of luck with the marathon.

I used to get it evey summer usually when i start training up for the cross country season and would be out for 2-3 weeks. Have had no problems last or this summer thank god. they are the worst injury to have because they constantly come back. I still do most of my running on grass to be safe with the odd run on road

3-4 week with me, with 2 weeks total rest and then i was able to train, Still do a good bit of work in the root cause to make sure they dont return.

Hi, I suffer from shin pain too - went to the chiropractor today and he fixed it in five minutes...I wouldn't usually talk about chiro's because people seem to have issues about the concept of what they do but once i saw 'car crash' alarm bells went off!

Try brett or ward stevens in terenure. They test and alleviate problems until your whole body is balanced.

    Hope you fix it!

'edit : was also in amphibian king the other day looking to relieve shin pain!'

Suffered with chronic shin splints myself. Tried all the usual suggestions.....every pair of runners, every exercise, multiple physios, every generic insole and nothing worked.

If they are bad you need to go to a podiatrist and get customized orthotics. Expensive but well worth it in the long run. I used a guy in Castleknock called Gabriel Scullion but I've heard of people getting them cheaper.

As for the marathon.....I was in a similar boat to you. All trained up and dying to go but shin splints were preventing me from long run training. The orthotics take a while to break in so it was too late for that. I was signed up for the New York marathon with flights bought etc. so I wasn't giving up easily. Stopped training for a few weeks beforehand and in the end I got around with the help of 6 neurofen.

Many people will be aghast at the mere suggestion of masking the pain and running through it but I'm just letting you know that it worked for me. It's not the ideal solution but if you are very keen to run it like I was, you could give it a try on a 10 or 12 mile training run and see how it works out. If you are doing any serious damage believe me you will feel it through a couple of iboprufen.

Best solution though would be to get the orthotics and leave it til next year.

Suffered from shin splints for last 10 years. Tried orthothics and physio but couldn't get a fix. So bad that a 15 min road run was never possible.

Then I decided to lose weight and change from asics to New Balance and now (touch wood) they are sound!! :)

thank you all so much for advice re shin splints. They have been my biggest curse in running. tobefrankwithya, did something similar with masking the pain, antifreeze is a great man to hide pain at start of race! and as you say i know some of you are saying 'are you bleedin mad but you know us runners, will do anything. so recon i will try orthotics, will NOT be running on road until marathon and fingers crossed. thanks again, some good advice there.
