Cost of living in Cyprus

Hi, myself and my girlfriend are thinking of booking a holiday in Protaras in Cyprus (near Aiya Napa but not in it!) for the second week in September. We heard some horror stories about it being very expensive to eat and drink in - is it true? Is there a Parisien like price tag of €8 on a pint of beer? And how much should we expect to pay for a meal?

If anyone could help I'd appreciate!

    Thanks.

I've been to Cyprus quite a few times. It is more expensive than say mainland Spain or Portugal. In some places, you will pay up to €8 for a beer (certainly in nightclubs) but local bars should see you get away for about €4-5 for a beer. The restaurants are wide and varied but you should get away with dinner and wine for about €50-€60 for two. The one thing I will say in Cyprus's favour is that because it is more expensive, you don't really get the knackery element (where's the Irish Bar?? The food is sh&te) in it.

Yea and that's what I'd be happier with. If I don't see an Irish bar and tattoos of the tricolour I'll be happy!

    Thanks.

Paphos (lovely harbour type town) is really nice but I don't think anyone is doing direct flights into it from Ireland, you can get them from the UK though. Peyia is also nice, not far from Paphos and set in the mountains, you would need a car. Coral Beach is also lovely, not far from Paphos. Some really nice bars and nice restaurants in it. Enjoy it wherever you go.

I agree with Paphos. I have a place there and it's the more relaxed side of the island. We're up on the tomb of the kings road which has all you need [restaurants , pubs , banks shops etc] but is only a few mins from the harbour , clubs and old town. It's lovely in september , 24-28 or 29 degrees and always plenty of sunshine.
Price wise it's the same as here for food and drink to be honest and sometimes a little cheaper. There's loads to do. Tomb of the kings , Coral bay etc. Hire a car if you can , it's right hand drive over there and makes life easier to get around.
Restaurant wise try Chloe's , Mexatas and Grazie's depending on the style of food you like.
    Enjoy!

I'd love to go to Paphos guys but I can find nothing reasonable - we would like to get somewhere for under €500 and Protaras seems to be the only alternative to Ayia Napa. Even if we got flights seperately where would we go about getting accommodation? Thanks for the info.

    Besides the likes of hotel.com
you can also try bookcyprus.com (local website).
If you don't mind being far out Paphos way, why don't you try Jame's villa's. They have package holidays to cyprus staying in a villa from Dublin and Uk. Quite reasonable actually.

Stayed here http://www.alvahotel.com/article.php?id=21 in Protaras a number of years ago. It was a quite and relaxing place close to the bars and restaurants of Protaras and also very close to the beach. Nice pool too.

Don't remeber it being that expensive....use to buy the local beer in the supermarket and bring back to the apartment which was nice and cheap.

There were a couple of tacky bars alright but there wasn't the knackery element there.....it was a nice holiday.

Thanks for that everyone. Dusty, if we decide on Paphos I'll do that, thanks for the recommendation! Do0gle, Protaras seems to be working out cheaper, once there's no tacky element and good but reasonable food and drink we'll be happy! Really want to just relax during the day, maybe find smaller beaches etc and wander though the town at night for a few drinks.
