the weather doesn't really bother me when training(cycling , running ) but i wonder is it actual safe to cycle in stong winds and heavy rain ?
does the weather prevent any of ye going out cycling ?

Noob to cycling here and don't cycle as part of a commute but I enjoy getting out in the lashing rain, same as running in it.

The wind freaks me out though, won't go out on the bike in strong wind.

    Only DirkVoodoo.

Sometimes the wind can blow you about a bit. If it's seriously windy I'll stay out of the bigger hills

i cycle in both wind and rain. I don't mind the rain, I dislike the wind. If you wait for the perfect day over here you never do any cycling at all. Sometimes I bail out, but normally I go out anyway... the wimp list is a powerful thing.

Unlike Raam, I would tend to favour the hills when it is windy, they generally have a sheltering effect (although it can get pretty bad on top of Sally Gap.)

I don't mind wind, not a fan of rain though it doesn't stop me going out... much.

Yes, severe weather, especially high winds, does make cycling more hazardous, and generally I will avoid riding in it where possible. It's not like it's much fun either.

That said, the weather in Ireland is rarely severe.

No - I wouldn't say it prevents me from going out. The only thing that would really stop me going out would be ice on the roads.

As raam says - probably best to avoid big hills on REALLY windy days. Especially something like the sally gap - it's very exposed up there.

Last day like this I remember was during the spring - had to cycle at the white line to stop from being blown in to the ditch by the crosswinds on the sally gap. Then the descent was a bit sketchy, to say the least.

I hate it when it's like that. It's quite fast along the plateu heading towards the crossroads. Then when those crosswinds hit you're all over the shop!

Same here. You can't get a cold from cycling in the wind.

Hate the wind and the rain makes cycling on armadillos "interesting" but I try not to let it put me off.

Rain and cold you can mitigate by wearing the right gear, but not much you can do about wind. I especially hate cross-winds - but I usually try and plan a route that heads into the wind for the first half then I'll have a tail wind to carry me home!!

There's no such thing as a tailwind. It's either a headwind or you are "feeling really strong" ;)

Snow, Ice, Wind, Rain...... are all fun to train in. Its the really really hot days that annoy me .. the ones where you'r riding hard and sweating horribly -- thankfully that happens onve per year in Ireland.

Some crazy fella even posted a youtube of cycling in snow in wicklow -- but that guy was stupid.

Nothing wrong with a bit of snow and ice

Ice doesn't break bones - the road does!!!:) Next time I think I'll just lie there and let the cold dull the pain and inflammation.

Ice and frost are not much fun - although the snow last year was a bit of a laugh cycling in!

Hail is not much fun either - feels like a million kids throwing stones at you!

Cycled to work this morning - strong headwind/no rain = bad news
Cycled home this evening - tailwind, lashing it down = good news - going under the psychologically important (to me anyway!) 40 minute mark for the first time, and beating the previous best by 20 seconds. Who do I report my new world record to?:)

the motorists --- they keep tabs on fast cyclists and try to chase them down

    You jerk!

I don't mind a bit of rain. Headwinds really make me suffer, I lack the power to get through them.

? No. We're the tough mofos that ascended through drifts of snow on mountain bikes, scaled the mountain and blasted home through snow-bound motorists

edit - Good reminder Blorg, what a day.

I noticed it yesterday on the Conor Pass. Although that could have been the low cloud rather than just persistent rain! I have no idea how nice the area is as I never got a view all day.:(
