Car Hire Company or Broker??

Have been looking through various car hire company websites and cant decide what to do for our 6 day family trip to italy
if i order with hertz for example, the car range im looking at will cost around 300 euro. (funnily enough it only comes up at 220 on the hertz.it site by anyway....)
if i price the same on a brokers website, it comes up as 200. obviously u have no idea which car hire company will supply your car with a broker but are the brokers trustworthy or do they take their cut and let you fend for yourself if issues arrise? travelling with a 4 yr old so dont need any added stress
i will be taking out a separate policy for the excess elsewhere for peace of mind (and also the fact its a 1/3 of the price than that from the hire companies)
so i guess basically what im after is a few opinions on car hire brokers

Do a search on this forum. There is a thread every 2nd day looking for the same results.

I only use Avis but I always hunt around and always found the cheapest quotes on http://www.arguscarhire.ie

I don't think I've booked a car directly in over 5 years now. I tend to use an Irish company, novacarhire.com, who say on their site :
What if something goes wrong when I'm trying to collect the vehicle?

In the unlikely event of complications it is very important to remain calm. Chances are you're in a foreign country and getting frustrated will not help matters. If the rental company can not help, if possible, give our offices a call and we will do everything we can to resolve the problem for you.

Thanks, in the end, used novacarhire to price the cheapest, then booked directly with Maggiore. Ended up getting an Alfa 147 JTD for 50 less than a fiesta was costing with hertz
