If anyone hasent seen what the new firmware update is going to look like, take a look at the official vid - here

    Premium theme's, avatars, etc etc

Looks like a major leap to gain the revenue they are going to lose from the price drop from downloadable junk!

    Anything about mkv support?

    Not that I'm aware of.

Bah! Guess it's a good thing. I bought a dell studio hybrid specifically for playing mkvs and if they enabled support now I'd probably be pissed. :)

Can someone explain what cross-game voice chat is and what makes it so wow.

Wow, never felt so overcome with an urge to say "meh" while watching a youtube video.

Just hope it speeds things up.

The ability to chat with friends whether they are in your game or not. Doesn't affect me as the only time I want to talk to people is when I am playing with/against them, but for some, it appears to matter a great deal.

I actually think this is a great update. I started a thread ages ago about what people would like in the next firmware. A revamped friends list and ability to see if you have new messages came up a lot so it looks like they are listening [though this should have been in all along]

I see. It gets a big meh from me.

I think it is a crap update. Almost purely cosmetic and shiny to distract people from the fact they have done f*** all but stick in more ads for the PS Store.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,329 ✭✭✭wcarey1975

Any improvment is a welcome bonus. After all it's still free to play opline once you get the console. Small improvements are better than either no improvements or subscription based improvements.

I agree, people give out about the free update every time there is one. At least they are doing something !! Take Apple for example they charge for ipod updates every now and again. €10 for weather, notes and stocks in update 2.0 i think it was. What a pile of plop.

This coincides nicely with the release of the PS3 slim...

O.K I wont be greedy ..Yes it is free , BUT !

    a) New shortcuts to the PSN Store all all menus:rolleyes:

    b) New sparkly graphics on XMB:rolleyes:

    c)New themes that move

d)new avatars (some u need to pay for)

Thats all that 3.0 is all about , purely aesthetic changes , no software changes no .mkv support .

Dont get me wrong i like my aesthetics aswell but I am only on the desktop for no more than 30secs before i load a game or site or Disc .

No great improvments from me , just to be seen to do something if you ask me , I would say these improvements would have not taken more than a week to develop.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking, can't see anything that justifies an x.0 number attached to it.

Sony's updates don't work like that though, all the biggest PS3 firmware updates have been decimal points, like when in-game XMB came with 2.40.

I like the look of 3.0, I like the fact that there is now a message notification and friend icon at the top right of the XMB. The 'What's New' section will also list your recently played games so it has some other functionality besides 'ads'.

Edit: Here's a video that explains some of the features and show off a PixelJunk Monsters theme and shows how the 'What's New' section works.

Good link Gothpunk, as he says in the video :
"to improve your playstation network experience"

Give the MKV support some time.

I agree though that you should be able move your icons around and customize your XMB anyways, that isnt hard surely to create shortcuts for the PS Store in all menus. And dont call me Shirley.

Why no complete revamp of the music system?

These are incremental updates, who knows what the next year will bring firmware wise. The Slim will surely bring a larger user-base so who knows if that will effect what they add. What in your opinion is wrong with the music system? Do you mean how stuff is arranged? The newest PSP firmware enabled music to be stored in sub folders, so you could have 'Artist - Album - Track' instead of just 'Artist - Tracks' so that would be a good thing for the PS3 to add. Sony did release a Photo Album app so it's likely they could add a music app as well. Unfortunately the 'ignorant masses' scream the loudest for cross game voice chat so if Sony really listen to the userbase they may be focusing on that. You should just ask Sony for what you want, there are two official PlayStation blogs for example that seem to be a good platform for that.

People complained about there not being a more visible friend and message notification icon. 3.0 has it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,726 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I have plenty of issues with the music system. Why can the PS3 only go off and find album art for CD's it is ripping itself? Why can't it do it for an album I am importing via USB?

Why can't it support higher quality WMAs? Highest I can currently go to is 192. I would have loved some kind of lossless support other than wav becasue WAV files don't retain track/artist/art info so upon importing them you just have 15-odd anonymous tracks.

Also, why can't pads charge on standby? There are third party perphirals available which allow this.

I don't think this update warrents a 3.0 status either although it is bigger than the last few nothing ones.

this is a great update the animated themes are gonna be amazing:Dnew friends list tab thingy nice...only bad thing is why add so many ps store shortcuts:confused:jesus thats stupid you only need one! hopefully you can delete the new shortcuts and just have the original 1

.mkv is a video file type which is capable of HD I believe. People say Sony don't wanna implement it on the PS3 for Piracy reasons (Blu Ray conflict of interest etc) but I really think thats p***ing into the wind if true.

I don't actually know what I want from a major firmware update. No idea if BC is possible in that way for a start and not top pushed about .mkv given the increased file size.

mkv is actually just a container. HD is possible in plenty of ways but for some reason people ripping HD movies are insistent on including subtitles, multiple audio streams etc. They can be included in regular avi files so I really don't get why mkv is being favoured so much.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,030 ✭✭✭marko91

ahh i see i see....i wouldnt mind mkv support then since i got like 80 dvd quality movies from stgaevu:pwouldnt mind a few blurays for when i get a HDTV

Cool so you can have HD avis but they'd just be massive?

Like I said, mkv is only a container, not a codec. An mkv will usually be the same size as an avi when they're ripped with the same codec. avi is only a container too, it's not that important to the file size.

MKV is a video format very popular for HD videos.

You'd want to talk to someone playing a different game than you for many reasons.

Your friends and are both online and want to talk to arrange a meet up but don't want to quit the game your playing in order to do that. You are about to start a multi-player game and want to let the other person know your turning up because you arranged to before hand.

You want to have a private chat even though your playing the same game as you don't want the whole public chat in game crowd to know about how your day at the bank was and how the security guy always turns up late on Friday :P

Among the many features included in the July (08) released firmware 2.40 in-game music was one of them. but there have been very few games to take advantage of this feature

divx 7 includes mkv support so if the ps3(divx6) get updated to divx7 we get Matroska .

as sony only let each container have set codecs divx 7 will be set with these

    taken from http://www.divx.com

With its unique ability to store multiple formats and media features (subtitles, audio tracks, etc.) in a single container, MKV has quickly gained in popularity — becoming the preferred file extension for high definition (HD) video. Millions of online videos use the .mkv file extension, with more coming every day.

Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), the preferred audio format for high definition videos, is a substantial improvement on the well-known MP3 format and has become the standard for high-quality digital audio.
The AAC standard is the perfect complement to the H.264 video technology that powers DivX® 7, providing superior audio to match the HD video on your computer, in your living room or on the go.

H.264 is the new standard for high definition (HD) digital video, and for good reason. A codec based on the H.264 standard compresses a digital video file so that it only uses half the space of MPEG-2 (the DVD standard), to deliver the same quality video. This means you can enjoy stunning HD video the way it was meant to be seen without sacrificing speed or performance.

Initial support for SSA and ASS subtitles which can either be stored within the MKV file or externally

ordered chapters allows you to encode the opening and/or ending sequences of a series into a file of their own, and then have the opening and ending automagically inserted into each episode at the appropriate places. This saves space, because instead of encoding the OP/ED into every episode, they are only encoded once, so the main episode can be made smaller.

streaming is still downloading but when you exit the web browser the file is gone.

the ps3 web browser does not support divx in the web browser.

but you can download the video then play it with the web browser

hover over the download icon on the video press triangle then file and save target

    Varik,
Thanks for the update on DivX, i dont think a lot of people know that DivX7 will include mkv compatability. Thats good news. :D

Also the in game music thing is a joke alright, i have warhawk which is great for your own tunes. I was under the impression that all games after that 2.4 update would support it, joke IMHO.

Its something to do with an MS patent i believe. I remember someone posting about how sony to be careful what they do with XMB as MS have a lot features patented.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,012 ✭✭✭✭thebman

Yeah I think they have it patented which is quite sad. It isn't great on 360 anyway TBH.

Its better for a game to have an actual good sound track that has picked tracks that would suit the game.

Otherwise you might as well make your own playlist for each game yourself from your own tracks. However, you can't make playlists on 360 with content from external drives and so the feature is next to useless IMHO.
