Classic cool wall

Just had an idea for a Top Gear Cool Wall style thread. The rules:

Pick any car, and say whether it is seriously uncool, uncool, cool or sub zero (and, in very exceptional cases, certain cars could go in the DB9 fridge). The most important bit, though, is that you MUST back up your claim. (Or tell us why you are right and the rest of us are wrong, if you are going to do it Jezza's way :))

    Here's a few:

Fiat 127: It's cool because it's small and Italian, and its engine is so good that there was an entire class in banger racing just for it.

Peugeot 205 GTi: Sub zero, because it's from the Eighties, and it's a brilliant hot hatch.

Mercedes W123: Uncool. It may be a very good car, but that doesn't make it a cool car. Especially when people find out that your Mercedes has wind-up windows and no power steering.

Standard Eight: Seriously uncool, because it was rubbish and was totallly upstaged by the Triumph Herald that replaced it (which is definitely a cool car).

Edit: No offence to any Standard Eight owners out there, just like the real Cool Wall this is entirely subjective and most likely a load of sh!te. :)

    My opinions:

    Sub Zero: 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 (a real man's car! :D)

Cool: MG Montego Turbo (underrated classic IMO).

Uncool: 1980 Cadillac Seville (looked terrible, and the crappy diesel-converted Oldsmobile diesel engines were terrible in them)

Seriously uncool: Fiat Ritmo / Strada (enough said)

Surely you mean hotrod racing?Iv never heard of a 127 being bangered, but the engines were little dingers alright, you could rev the nuts off them.

I'm sorry Luke, but that's the biggest load of sh*te i've ever heard... If having electric windows and power steering is a criteria for being a cool classic, then i'd say that 95% of us can pack it in right now... In fact, i like the fact that most of them have manual windows.... gives it the extra touch of classic class :D

I dont see how one of the most timeless and durable cars of all time could be considered uncool just 'cos it doesn't have electric windows, and if someone was foolish enough not to get PAS thats hardly the cars fault.

I also think that anyone who thinks a black Trans Am with a bird on the bonnet is cool is on another planet. I'm liking the others though, but I feel this thread is going to turn into an argument so I'm gonna bow out, I already have too many conflicts in my life !

I'll leave the whole cool wall thingy to Jeremy, Richard and James... Let them fight over it :D:D

The 1049cc Sport redlines at 7200!, not bad for 1978

ooohhhh i just want one of them

    definatly sub zero !!!!!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,755 ✭✭✭ianobrien

    Mine would be

Sub-Zero - Shelby King Cobra (427ci IIRC) or a Mk1 Granada Coupe (I sorry now that I just missed one last year)

Cool - RS1600 and the RS1800, as driven by Coleman, Vatanen, Clarke etc. Also a 205GTi, 1.9 in white

    Uncool - Most BL stuff from the '70 & 80's (except 6R4's & the Rover/Buick V8)

Seriously uncool - that Trans-am in 1975's post. At least there's room for the ten gallon hat

    Bordering between cool and Sub-Zero:

A Mk2 Golf GTi, totally unmodified, 3-door, either 16v or 8v, on original steelies and with small bumpers, in non-metallic red.

Never liked the Mk1 as much as the Mk2, although I'm with you on the Granada and the Sud.

I would agree that the Mk1 Golf is far cooler, especially in small bumper/rear lamp form.

.........leaking air suspension is what it is. The W109's used air and the later model, the W116, used hydropnuematic. Neither are supposed to drop down ever !
