Open oppurtunities into Engineering

    Hey!
The last couple of days have probably been really been stressful for most of us applying for for college for the first time, this has proven very true for myself as I've had numerous problems with the CAO processing my foreign exam results.

Unfortunately the options I took in France don't allow me to pursue any kind of engineering course in DCU (I got 13/20 or 65%) So I was informed of a scheme by a lady in the admissions office in DCU called the open oppurtunities scheme... I've just applied but would love to hear from someone with experience regarding this type of scheme/course!

What can I expect? Is it likely I'll actually get an engineering course in DCU??

    Thanks for your time!

    Andrew

I know nothing of this scheme, however, as can be seen in the following link, there appears to currently be vacant places for DCU Engineering courses:

    http://www.cao.ie/courses/vpl_courses_popup.htm

This means that after the first round of course selection, these courses weren't filled up; i.e: not enough individuals applied who had the minimum requirements.

However, these places may still be filled soon in future rounds.

Last year though, if I recall correctly, by the end of the whole system, there were still unfilled places for DCU Engineering courses. There is actually a chance that the same may be the case for this year.

It appears to me that your opponent here is the minimum requirements rather than supply and demand competition.

    Bonne chance.

    Cheers for your reply!

I'm fully aware of that seeing as I know that I had actually obtained enough points to get into the engineering course of my choice however as you say its the minimum requirements that have let me down. Which is where this scheme comes into play...supposedly it reviews individual cases concerning applicants who failed to obtain the neccesary minimal requirements. I was just wondering if anybody had actually had any experience with it.

Well I guess just remember that (I'm sure) DCU wants to fill up all its places. They will probably be on your side.

I can only hope! Would they sooner start the year with vacancies or do their best to fill up the course regardless of applicants' failure to meet minimum requirements?

There is an open opportuinities in DCU. I believe the lecturers assess your results and interview you to see if you are suitable. I would contact the school secretary. I do believe they are next week as my thesis advisor mentioned he was doing them.
