How do mushrooms survive to the next year?

Curious about this. Some mushrooms only grow in very cold temperatures, right? So if they all die after the winter season, then how do they survive until the next season?

What you see growing above the ground and pick and eat is not the fungus itself, but just the fruiting structure whose purpose is to distribute spores to spread the fungus further. The 'real' fungus is actually underground, or embedded in some other structure such as a rotting tree trunk. It usually looks like a fine web, almost like the hair roots of some plants. Being protected like that they can survive winters and low temperatures easily.
