Is the 1st September to early for duck shooting? Was out for a walk today and came across a Duck sitting on a few chicks maybe a week or so old, it got me thinking that in only a few weeks the season opens. I think its a month to early any one else of the same opion?

Way too early in my opinion. The ducks we are shooting are our own home grown stocks and there's nothing on them to eat at that early stage. Most of them shot don't even have their full plumage. I'd rather see the season start in October or even November but extended until mid to late Feb. At least that way we are taking migratory birds and not our own home grown ones. The birds are also fully grown and delicious to eat with a good layer of fat.

I have long held the view that duck season should be the same for pheasant, I dont shoot ducks untill then.

I heard a rumour that the club on the river slaney down here are putting the season off for a month or so to give the birds a chance as they are very small at the moment.

I agree it is way too early they should take september off and give us an extra month at the end instead, they get slaughterd in september.

Theres actually more duck in ireland in february then in september thanks to migratory duck so maybe a change in the season would be a good idea..

This seesm to be the general consensus here and I know it's the same amongst my shooting friends. How would one go about starting a campaign to get things changed?

    NARGC?

    Politicians?

    Dept. of whatnot?

    Petition?

    Any ideas........

The 1st September is far too early to open the duck season. The 1st of November would make a lot more sence. The problem is getting people to voice this opinion to the relevant authorities as it is seen as giving into the anti's
