    Hi,

I had been working in a half-post for the HSE for over 14 months, the contract for my job ran out last Thursday, so while I was partly employed (X's & O's docket) I am now offically unemployed at the moment.

For a long time I have had an idea for a business that I want to get up and running, it is something I know I will really enjoy doing and hopefully will earn a good living from it. I have savings that I would be using but do any of you have and information or links regarding what's available in Funding, Grants, et... from Government, Enterprise Boards, and even Social Welfare, I heard the will give you some of the dole payment for 3 years while you get up and running. Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Woody

    Hi Woodgate,
Through Social welfare you might be able to avail of the back to work enterprise scheme. You have to be unemployed for a year first before you get onto the long term scheme (ie. you will get welfare payments for up to 2 year) but the short term scheme gives you payments up to a year. That is if you can get onto it.
You need to prepare a Business plan with all your financial info (how you are going to generate your income, how long until you break even etc) and you will need to meet with someone in your local developement board. In Galway it is Galway City Partnership or Galway Rural Development. I wasn't sure where you were based.
With regards to grants, they seem to be few and far between and any that are available have fairly strict criteria. If you have some savings though you should be able get yourself started.

It all depends on what sector you are operating in. If it might lead to exports then you need to contact Enterprise Ireland. Then there are the local county enterprise boards, which may help you out. You would need a complete business plan, with sales projections etc. for this.

If it is retail based then as far as I know you will get nothing from anyone!

Thanks for the comments lads. The business would be on the catering side of things, but in a specific area. There would be no exporting or anything like that, basically retail.

I was almost sure I posted on this thread ages ago. Ah well what I had said was there is an EU group called Leader that give out grants. I couldn't find there website. If you contact your local Leader office they can help. Try directory inquiries for their number.
    Good luck!
