    Hello Folks,

Suppose I want to open a shop selling footwear online to Ireland and the UK but want to do a bit of research into the area first.

Where do I go to find out info such as:

    1. What proportion of Irish adults buy clothes online each year? By what rate is this increasing?
    2. How much is spent on online clothes sales each year in Ireland?
    3. How many pairs of shoes are sold in Ireland each year?
    4. How many pairs of shoes are sold online in Ireland each year? Or bought by Irish people online?
    5. What section of society (age, gender income etc) is most likely to buy online?
    6. Do people prefer to buy from an Irish online footwear seller as opposed to ordering from abroad? Are they willing to pay a premium for this?

Any ideas on where to obtain info like this would be much appreciated.

I've tried looking at the http://www.cso.ie/ site but I cannot find any relevant information.

    Thanks in advance

PS The footwear idea is just an example, I'm planning something else in the clothing retail area though.

I would try going to www.mintel.com, they normally provide info on consumer trends and data. The only thing is, it may cost you.

Alternative is to get onto consumer associations or trade associations, so for your example, is there a trade association for shoes ? If so they may have data for you.
    Cheers

This isn't what your looking for but theres a book by Tim Ferris called "four hour workweek".

In it he describes excellently how to set up an online business and different methods of seeing if a business is viable. eg. place ads with google and see what clickthrough rate you get

its not an answer to your question but I think it should help you if your serious about your venture

Thanks for the tip, just read that book on holidays, had some good suggestions in it alright.

Found some useful info at jnir.ie but am still looking for more.

eMarketer could be worth taking a look at - may not cover Ireland in enough detail for you, but you never know. Only downside is that it requires a subscription.

    www.emarketer.com

Here's the title of a sample report/graph that a quick search for Ireland and shopping threw out:

Leading Products and Services that Adult Internet Users in Ireland* Will Purchase Online during the Holiday Season this Year, by Age and Gender, October-November 2007 (% of respondents in each group). Publication Date: February 14, 2008

    Hi Blobert,

Try Central Library in Illac centre (Ilac Centre, Henry Street, Dublin 1).

It doesn't mean that you will get all the answers there but i'm sure you will at least get some more new ideas where to go to find them.

    It worked for us :)

Thanks for the reply, I've had a look in there already but had not seen anything that looked useful. What kind of information were you able to gleam from there?

    blobert,

The most useful were articles from magzines and newspapers. If they mention some statistics (and this is already good!) they always give their source. So next you need to find the actual source for more concrete information :)
