Enclosed orders, the vow of silence and communications

...sorry for my ignorance. Not sure if 'vow of silence' is correct. A friend of a friend is going in to an enclosed order. Does this mean he cannot correspond in any way with the outside world, can he have a phone, can he write letters, can he get visitors?

No idea! But it's probably best to ask him before he crosses the door!

Almost certainly not a phone; letters possibly; visitors almost certainly. But he is probably going to join an enclosed order so that he can limit his contacts with the world outside, and concentrate on what he has decided is most deserving of his concentration, namely God. I would love to have had that calling and the strength to answer it.
