I Just got my CAO results yesterday. i had applied for
DK765 Film and video in Dundalk IT, i did,nt get the course i also applied for CW547 but did,nt get that either. The points were 315 and 310 my points are around 250.

So now im planning on doing a 2 year FETAC course in film and video at stjohnscollege in Cork ending with a 1 year level 6 .

What are your thoughts on this i dont see any way of getting my degree, this seems my only option will i have trouble getting work, will i learn at the same standard as youd expect in college, are there any advantages to doing a FETAC course,

Im am looking forward to the course but i am worried that not having a degree will really affect my chances.

    Could use some advice?

Ok first off, there is no substitute for a degree. That being said, the industry you are looking at would definately place a lesser emphasis on degree's than other industries. Personal interest, creativity, and technical skills are all more important over academic smarts. Hell, one of my mates has been working in windmill lane recording studios (and his right hand is the new Tuc cracker ad!) and he did spanish or something. So in my opinion, you won't be closing any doors, and you will get the same level of skills training. You just mightnt have access to all the latest and greatest gizmos in the course.

Second, your course. Have you looked into this in detail? Fetac can act as an alternative route to the course you want, other than LC points. For instance:

    Go here: http://www2.cao.ie/fetac/fetac_search.php
and select Dundalk institute of Technology, and you will come to the offered courses page. Now look for DK765.

Ok, see where it says "Essential FETAC awards" at the top? Well in the column for DK765 it says "Any". That means that you can do any fetac course, and qualify to get into DK765 IF you meet the requirement in the next column "Essential FETAC Modules". In this case you just have to get 1 distinction (above 80%), or 2 merits (above 65%) in your modules.

    Now, go here:http://www.fetac.ie/guide/level5_index_certs.htm
and have a look at all the Fetac courses. Let's take "EMMPX Multimedia Production", cuz it's similar to what you want. You can click on it to see what modules are involved and get more detail.

    Then lastly, go here: http://www.qualifax.ie/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid=66
And see halfway down it has a box for Course Code? Throw EMMPX in there, press search, and that will show you all the colleges that do that course.

so if you did that course, and got the results, you could get into your dundalk degree course next year (and you also have an extra qualification!).

But remember you can do any fetac course to get in there, so have a bit of a trawl and you might find something near to where you live.

Any questions, give Susan MacNeill a call on +353-1-8659500 or email her at smacneill@fetac.ie.

My brother was in a similar position as you & i had a chat with her to find out all that stuff.

    Good luck!

First i did both i did a fetac level 5 information technology and then went on to do a degree in computing and am now entering a masters. I found that i could adjust to collage and the work much better with the featc cert i also doubled the amopunt of points i got in the leaving i got 250 after my featc that doubled to over 400. Another thing about your ffetac level six award might mean that you can enter the second year of a degree course skipping the first year altogether because3 a level 6 fetac is equal to a higer cert in the nqi table.

I did both and found that they complement each other
