    Hi
I just got a letter saying that my application for BTEA was successful which I'm delighted with cos I heard nothing for 6 weeks and I was getting worried!
The letter from BTEA says that I have to provide a confirmation letter saying that I'm registered as a FT student from the college which is fine, what I'm wondering is will I still receive my usual JSA payments until I get that confirmation letter from the college?because I need to save up all my JSA money from now til september to pay the registration fee in order to get the confirmation letter

    Can anybody confirm this?

Congrats on the news! Hope I'm successful too. As far as I know you have to sign off the dole and wait for btea. However I believe you can contact your community welfare officer and work something out in the interim.

    Hi OP

That's terrific news. Well done. I'm starting my second year next month and can't wait. What are studying? Last year I got a letter signed by the college (IT Sligo) on registration day and brought it to the social welfare. It's just a transfer across from your previous benefit to the BTEA. As well as you weekly payments you get a 500 euro once off payment that goes towards books, stationary etc with your first weeks pay. It's real handy and you get that once a year. Regarding the registration fee I paid it and got it back at the start of the year (start of Jan), however a girl on my course spoke to the student advisor and managed to not pay it. A bit strange alright. Best of luck. :)

Thanks for all the quick replys!
But does anybody know if I will continue getting my JSA until I get my registration letter from the college and my BTEA is in payment?or is my JSA now stopped?

Your JA should stay in payment until the Local office transfers your claim over to BTEA on your start date in college.

A little bit off topic here, are you saying that if you get BTEA you dont have to pay the €1500 registration fee?

Right i have just started on jsa. I first went in at the start of june so by next june i will have been on jsa a year. I want to apply to DIT to do bakery and pastry arts management degree. I am going to save with the credit union as much as i can and take out a loan to pay for my first year. I am wondering how the back to education allowance works. From what point do i apply for it? Do i say it to the college? Do i apply to college through cao? It would be amazing if this works out as i want to achieve these skills and start my own business. I talked to a fas officer and she said i might be eligible for a grant in my second year. Any help really appreciated :)

Hi there am not an expert on the subject but my advice is, if you are applying to dik as a mature student apply through cao, will say on their website when its open for 2010 applications. (if you apply early its cost 25euro)
Then in june/july go to your local sw office and get the btea application form, fill in out saying you have applied to college. Then when you start college in sept your payment will be switched over to btea and you wont have to "sign" every month. Best of luck wit it all hope it all goes to plan for you.:)

Just wondering if it is too late to apply for a BTEA? I was made redundant in Jan so have worked up enough time, but I am wondering if I am eligable as I have a degree and am looking to go back and do a PLC (Fetac Level 5 course) I have already been accepted in this course, but haven't applied for my BTEA yet.

No it's not too late to apply.
However you are not eligble for the reason you pointed out.

Hi Snubbleste, thanks for your reply. Even if the course is a complete new change in career direction, would they not maybe consider it?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 31,117 ✭✭✭✭snubbleste

They could consider it, there is a clause for 'exceptional circumstances' in the allowance but it would mean you'd have to state your case to an officer at your local office and tbh since you have a degree I doubt you'd be successful.
But apply anyway, make an appointment with a facilitator in your local SWO and see how it goes!

Well if your local facilatator is anything like my one your screwed, to say she was ignorant is an understatement:mad:

Went into my local office yesterday morming (Kilbarrack) with form filled out, explained my situation to the facilitator, she reckoned there would be no problem getting the allowance, but it would be another week or so before they looked at the forms (up to their eyes). (My degree finished in 1995, so I suppose it was a long time ago now and I'm looking for a complete career change, so have to start at the bottom again) Had to say she was very friendly and helpful and to be honest, most of the staff there seem very obliging considering the huge pressure they are under.
From what I gather, if you are on jobseekers benefit, it is up to the discretion of each office to consider who is eligible etc

Did you have to persuade her as to why this would be in your best interest etc.?

I briefly explained my background and why I wanted to do the course (made redundant, was in advertising for 10 years, no luck on the jobs front, looking for a complete career change - the course in question involves working with animals) she seemed happy enough with that, but said it would be another week or so before they would look at all the BTEA forms from the area, but "it shouldn't be a problem" so fingers crossed, will keep you posted.
Snubbleste, just out of curiosity, do you work in a SW office?

I think you can because it is seen as part of the course and not as actual 'work'.

Got my letter today to say that my BTEA was accepted, I'm delighted. Have to say the crew in the local office are so efficient, I only put in the application last Monday.

I got accepted for the BTEA, I just filled out the form, explained where I stood - unemploed since end of Jan, no luck with jobs and looking for a career change. They didn't really ask me any questions and a week later I got a letter in the post to say I was successful (this was last Monday) TBH I think it depends on the local SW Office as they are the ones that decide your fate. Good Luck!
