Hello, I really wanted to get into WIT, but missed out, because of my maths grade, and didnt have any of their courses down for level 7/6. So I was checking my options, and found out they have this thing called undergraduate with a few courses available. I emailed them, and they said I can still apply now, but what is an undergraduate? If I get in will it be the same as if I got into a course through the CAO like normal?

i.e. are the courses at normal times as other ones, will I be allowed stay on campus, will i basically be considered a normal student? Im not sure what this is about like. DO I have to pay for the course or anything.
    Thanks.

undergraduate = up to primary degree

postgrduate = after primary degree (masters, PhD etc)

undergraduate is a general term, all courses up to degree level are "undergraduate"

that list seems to be for places recently announced by the Government for people who are unemployed (i.e. on the dole)

I do not think you would qualify if you are a school leaver but ring the college to confirm

Well, I got a reply from an email saying this:
Yes you can still apply even though you have only just completed your leaving cert. Yes the course is the exact same as if you applied through the CAO. You would get a student card on the day you start your course if your successful in getting a place.

    Kind Regards,
Im still not entirely sure though.

This sceam is for unemployed persons and as far as i am aware you have to be 6 months unemployed claimed job seekers allowance they are parttime course and the government will cover your fees. Now i had the same problem as you i did not have the maths grade so what i did was i went to cti(wcfe) did fetac level 5 information technology and repeated my leaving cert maths as a result of doing the fetac i got experience of computers before entering a degree as well as doubled my points to around 400. Listen don't panic there are many routes to entering wit. Trust me often taken the non traditional routes can benefit you i am now entering a masters in wit, i repeated my leaving cert maths without having to repeat every leaving cert subject call wcfe http://www.wcfe.ie/ 051- 874053 see if they are still accepting applications then see about repeating your maths paper only if thats want you want

An undergraduate is anyone in collage whom is currently studying for a degree , all those whom have been given a cao place this year will be undergrads. If you dont want to redo your maths leaving then you may try emailing the course leader mary barry mbarry@wit.ie, now i did commercial computing/commercial software development and so had a differnet course leader but they are always helpful she may be able to help. You may also try contacting the head of the department Dr. Mícheál ÓhÉigeartaigh moheigeartaigh@wit.ie

Well, I got an email back again saying that I HAD to be on social welfare for at least 6 months to do this course.

Im now considering doing a PLC course of multimedia in waterford, and like you said, then doing a retake of maths for the Leaving cert, then hopefully get into the course I want in September 2010.

    Good choice?

I think you have suffered as a result in the change of the economy over that last number of years numbers applying for computer course have been low now this year there has been an increase and even the points have increased for computing courses which i have not seen in the last four years.

    Good luck

So just so I have this right, even if I do this PCL course this coming year, I can repeat a few or a single Leaving cert subjects like maths and irish if I want, the only difference would be that I would do the study myself like in the librarys or go to evening classes or whatever, and the exam would be the same as when I did it in June, and would I do the exam in the place I did the PCL course?
And if I got a higher grade result in say maths in the repeat exam, that will cancel out my original grade in the results I just got will it?

There is alot of questions there.

    1. You can repeat individual leaving cert subject and combine two sitting of the the leaving cert you will not get extra points for the repeat maths paper you can only use it to meet the entry requirement for example if you got a e in the leaving cert now and redo the leaving cert maths paper and get a d2 for instance then that result will superside the previous result you could also get a lower mark in your second sitting .

    2. When i did cti, wcfe they offered the opportunity for us to resit or leaving cert maths paper what happend was we paid them and they brought in a maths teacher to teach use in the afternoons from 6pm to 9pm. They dont offer this every year and its based on numbers. However i did ring yeats collage to see if i could sit the paper with them or take part time claases to sit just that paper and they contacted me back now because cti was offering it i dont know about if it possible to do it with them

    3. In my fetac i got 4 merits and 5 distinictions and how it works is you get a certain number of points for a merit and a certain number of points for a distiniction http://www2.cao.ie/fetac/FETAC_Scoring.pdf (check link)so when you apply to cao next year your two sittings of the leaving cert will be assessed to see if they meet the subject entry requirements for entry to the course and your fetac cert will be assessed for points.

    4. So if the couse requires 300 points they will look at your fetac award to see if you got the required points And if the course requires english c3 they will take your 09 result maths d3 they will accept your 2010 result (your 09 result no longer exists).

    5. WCFE may accept you now if you apply i dont know the deadline may have passed. If you get into WCFE the next thing you got to do is ask thhem will the be putting on leving cert maths classes if they are not contact your old school and see if you can sit the maths paper with them, if you need help studying for the maths paper contact yeats.

My problem was that i did wrong maths paper and so i had to get help studying ordinary level you may not you maybe able to study on your own and do the paper with your old school while doing your fetac cert. FETAC is handy if you want to double your points you dont have to do it you can go back to school and repeat your entire leaving cert but if you have only failed one subject you may just want to repeat that paper in that case just repeat paper and combine the two sittings and apply to cao with out fetac.

I know its confusing but there are a variety of routes into third level
