06 volvo s40 power steering hose leaking fluid

My wife's 06 volvo s40 has started revving very high while idle. We took it into the local garage and they said it was leaking power steering fluid so the pump or hose needs to be replaced. They can’t do it and told us to take it back to the dealer. I’ll be taking it in this afternoon.

Is this a common problem on these cars? It seems crazy to have a major problem like this on such a new car. Am I reasonable in asking the dealer to cover part of the cost? (I know, good luck with that).

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

They discovered it was the power steering pump leaking. Apparently the pump is made of two parts that are welded together and it was leaking around the weld.

The garage has had the car for a week now waiting for the part. They gave us a free loaner for the week, fair play to them. They also said we could fill in a form to try and claim back the cost of the part.

I'm to pick it up in a couple of hours. Can I refuse to pay for the repair since it was clearly a manufacturing defect? (I doubt it) If I pay what chance do I have of recovering the cost? The car is 1 and a half years out of guarantee, but surely this kind of problem shouldn’t happen.

You should do some research. If you can find alot of owners with the same problem, well then you have a good case for a free or subsidised repair. Try to sound out the dealer re many others with the same problem.
Its a fair bit out of warranty at this stage so if its a one off, I wouldnt hold my breath. Have you a full history with the same dealer? This would help your chances.

I think if the car is over 3 years old the manufacturer really can't be responsible as its 18 months outside the warranty period . If you have a good relationship with the dealer & have a good/full service history they should submit some sort of claim for you. But from my experience you have to have had the car serviced with them which I suppose is fair if you expect them to represent you now.
