advice - ripwave or mobile broadband?

Hi, sorry if this is an annoying question that's always being asked but I wanted to know peoples experiences with mobile broadband (O2, Vodafone, 3G etc) versus something like Irish Broadbands ripwave service?
I was told by irish broadband that i could take their modem anywhere I liked and use the service (where there's availability). Since I mostly want it in my office (self employed and working in a temporary space with no previous landline), but would sometimes need to use it at home, this seems like an ok option.
The only major problem seems to be the 12 month contract, since I only really need it for 6 months, and I'm planning not to be in the country after that. But for something like ripwave or mobile broadband I think that it might be possible for me to pass it on to a friend who could use it and pay off the remainder?

so I'm pretty confused. I need to have a reliable service for those 6 months, but don't know who's the best to go for., or even if I have completely unrealistic ideas about what I'll be able to do with this service. I need to be able to stream video and upload files.

    thanks

Neither Ripwave nor 3G are what you could call reliable. You'll get what you get, and there's really nothing you can do to improve on it, if it's poor.

Ripwave can be very difficult to get a decent signal with, much worse than 3G, from what I've read. Coverage is patchy, so you'd need to check it out in both locations before you commit. It needs to be plugged into the mains too, so that's something else to consider.

If you only want it for a short period, PAYG from Vodafone might be your best option. O2 Clear is another option, and O2 have a free trial period again too. If you purchase any of them on the Internet, then you have a 7 day cooling off period, in which you can return it for a full refund. If you buy in one of the shops, you won't have that, unless their policy allows for a return.

Ripwave is similar but poorer technology to 3G (s-CDMA vs W-CDMA) on a higher frequency with poorer coverage and worse building penetration. Much poorer coverage as unlike 3G Mobile there is no national licence, just individual licenced masts.

It depends on specific area as to which is better. You could have 1/4 speed or x4 speed on 3G compared to Ripwave typical speed.

Neither is at all reliable compared to fixed Wireless Broadband, Cable or DSL
