Cross country running

    Hi, i am looking to do a few cross country races this winter. Can anybody tell me where i can find a list of races in leinster and also do i need to be a member of an athletics club to take part.

    Try www.athleticsleinster.org or www.dublinathletics.com. Your county may also have a website.For all county,provincial or national events you have to be a member of an athletics club to compete.But to the best of my knowledge there are a few open cross country events where anybody can compete around the country[Somebody else here will probably chip in with what they are as i couldnt name them without some research].
    I think the BHAA do some cross country races during the winter?

    Link to BHAA calendar http://bhaa.ie/images/library/file/Fixtures%20for%202009-3.pdf kicks off oct 10th - and the weekends from earlier in the year would be pretty close to the early 2010 races.

    thanks for the replys, i will check out thelinks. I have only ever done road races so i have never needed to be in a club, i will check out my local one. Another question, do you need to wear spikes for these races, i assume they are all on grass.

    Wearing spikes would be advisable as they are all on grass or then again alot are just in MUD!:D

    You don't need to be in a club to run the BHAA races.You just turn up and enter. You can pay 10 euro to join the BHAA and then it's a tenner for each race as far as I remember.

    Was thinking about this only today...Is it advisable to find a muddy field and run it once a week in order to prepare for a cross country race or how do people train for cross country?

    i incorporate interval sessions on a measured course though differerent people have different approachs. Key things are mileage and hills the usually stand to you in XC season

    I'm adding in a couple of hilly trail runs per week also, gets you huffing and puffing and will build leg strength.

    I would advise getting a pai of spikes. I used to run a lot of XC races and there was one race were I chanced a pair of road runners. Worst decision I made. I was hoping to be amonsgtthe top 5 at the finish and ened up around 15th place. I was slipping all over the place.
    Wearing spikes would be advisable as they are all on grass or then again alot are just in MUD!:D

    I expect a pair of very grippy fell/trail shoes would do a similar job as spikes. inov-8 mudclaws or walshes for instance.
