Just wondering if anyone here has been a mentor before or is concidering it this year? Do you have any advice, was it a worth while experience? I am going to be working weekends and studying this year so I am concerned that it may become a drain on my time if I do decide to do it but I'd also like to give something back while avoiding the politics and bickering that goes on in societys.

I did mentoring for two years, when I was in second and third year.
It's probably worthwhile to do it for one year, especially if you're in second year - I didn't find it that good the second year I did it!

It really only takes up two days of your time. You do a training day which will be coming up in the next few weeks, and then you give your mentees a tour of the campus, which takes about an hour.

You're supposed to text them a couple of times a year, but I've never gotten a reply from any of them to be honest. There's also a forum which you can access through your yourspace account, and your mentees can contact you through that, but again, the only reply I've gotten on there was accidental.

All in all, I'd recommend it, you get 100€ expenses, and it looks good on the CV (you get an alive cert. too).

    Ditto..

Did the whole mentoring thing few years back. Wouldn't worry about losing any free time...went to half a day of the training, did the orientation (i.e. walk of shame around campus), sent a few texts...that was it. None of my 'mentees' ever got back to me or anything.

Personally don't think its the most effective program in the world, but its a bit of a laugh and the hundred quid and free dinner helps.
