Eireman Middle Distance - What are you wearing?

Still 5 days to go but early forecasts aren't looking too great.

From Met Eireann: "Some dry, bright weather on Saturday with sunny spells, but wet and windy weather is expected later in the day and overnight."

I've completed some Sprint's and Olympic distances races, but it my first middle distance tri. To-date I've worn my tri shorts, tri top, and race belt under the wetsuit, and have the cycle shoes clipped in at T1 (so sock-less on the bike). And sock-less on the run.

However, I'm thinking it'll be a long day (especially if it's wet).

Anyone changing in T1 into more comfortable cycle gear (proper padded shorts? cycle top? rain jacket? padded gloves? overshoes? etc...)

Guessing that the run should be fine with tri shorts and tri top. And maybe take the few seconds to put on socks)

Hi Bagus, the last HIM that i did i wore cycling shorts over my trisuit for the cycle, i had these on under my wetsuit as didnt want to be fumbling in transition trying to put on cycling shorts while wet. I found that it made no diference to my swim time at all. I also wore sock for the bike, i think the few extra second putting them on will save you a lot of time from being uncomfortable. Best of luck.

I'm planning to put dry bike shorts over my tri suit for the bike whilst in T1- there aint much padding in the tri suit I will be wearing. I also plan to wear socks on the bike and have a spare (dry) pair in transition for the run if needed. Also considering if I need to wear a long sleeve top or arm warmers for at least some of the bike if its likely to be cold rain.

    Ive used these before
    http://www.amphibianking.ie/product_info.php?products_id=108 from 2XU.
Not associated with either 2XU or AmphibianKing in any way btw.

With the pockets and chamois they work pretty well all day long.

Oh yeah - if its looking cold out Ill wear short sleeve base layer under tri suit and carry arm warmers. Some people suffer more from the cold than others though. A little talc inside the arm warmers helps in T1 btw ... you're arms will be wet.

Uncomfortable from the cold? or blisters from skin rubbing?

If it's the cold, I have toe-covers that should sort the cold.

well both really. Maybe it is just me, but anything over OD in tri i have to wear socks, my feet are warmer on the bike if i wear socks and i dont get numb toes and on the run i find anything over 10 or 12k my feet get sore if i dont have socks on and i start to slow up, so for the time it takes to put on socks for the bike it saves me a lot more time on the run.

    My plan,

    1. Tri suit and arm warmers All worn under my wetsuit.
    2. Vaseline (in the magic spot to make the cycle easier)
    3. 3 X 750 bottles on the bike
    4. Loads of fig rolls (60 cals per one) - for the bike
    5. 1 x 500ml water in transition for when I come out of the swim, open water over my head to clean off the sea water ie SALT.
    6. Garmin HR monitor (HR monitor under wetsuit), watch put on in T1

    Eveything else as normal racing...

Socks on the bike - No
Socks on the run - No

    Good luck to all,

Anyone with other ideas for kit, I'd be keen to read what everyone else is planning to wear / use on the day.

Usually breakfast 3hrs before any race - Porridge + Toast & Jam + Banana + Juice = Aim to be very full

    My Plan:

A gel 15/20mins before the swim

    On bike:
    1.0Litre of Powerade (240 cal)
    0.5Litre of Water
Raison Bake Bar x2 - But not quite sure yet - I usually use these when training and would eat about 4 (600ish cal) over 3.5hrs or so...
I will probably try stomach the gels first, but eat the raison bake just to avoid that empty stomach feeling
Gels - High 5 energy gels w/caffeine (90cal) - I'll probably have 6-7 strapped onto my top tube and aim to consume 1 every 20min washed down with water/powerade
    Aim to consume 300 cal/hour

    Run:

Get at the beginnging and then around 3/6/9 mile markers or so washed down with whatever water I can stomach.

Apart from that will be wearing the usually stuff - tri shorts and top, and possibly arm warmers is cold under the wetsuit but ill decide on the morning, as the start of the bike might be cold at 7am. And ill definately be wearing socks/maybe visor

Thanks for the tips. I think I'll take the hit on time and put on decent cycle gear in T1.

50/50 whether I'll even be there though:-(
I have a slight head cold, so I'm not sure what to do.
Maybe start it, and see how I go. Pretty gutted after months of planning.

I don't want to get sick though, much more important things about to happen in my life... My better half is 38 weeks +
