sending off the old original Irish logbook for change of ownership and change of status from private car to classic. Will I get the original cardboard logbook back or will I get a replacement "modern" vehicle registration certificate. If there's a chance of not getting the original book back I'd nearly go in person or apply for a replacement book/VRC.

    Any advice?

AFAIK the old style "cardboard" logbooks should not be sent to Shannon. Shannon only handle the new style books. The old ones are processed by the local motor tax office. You can send it there or bring it yourself.

If that happens, they'll issue a new "cardboard" taxbook :-)

    Don't send it in !

I sent in one in dating back to the 50ies for a Vintage Bike, it got lost in the DOE office and was handed a fresh new replacement one instead. A log book remains the property of the DOE so they will not give a damn about how old it is or what sentimental value it has.

If you report it "missing" you will get a duplicate cardboard one that you can use while you preserve the old one. It will cost you e12 :)

I brought an old one to the local tax office yesterday and they said I couldn't be issued with a new one. They would update it and post it back to me.

The old tax books are cool. There is, however, an issue with them... If you want to take your car let's say to France, you have to pray that you won't get stopped by the local police. The would seriously question the legality of a handwritten document that has more than likely been amended many times with loads of stamps all over it... Like my 2CV Van (no longer mine now) changed colour about 5 times during its life, and the book was amended accordingly every time. You can imagine the mess... Try explain that to a french police officer on a power trip, that clearly doesn't speak english :D

but the duplicate books wont have the vehicle history on it, I've heard that they allways send the old one back but I wouldn't take the risk, go in in person.

This is true... But i wouldn't run the risk of being stopped (even for a routine check) with one of the old tax books....

I went into the local office today with the original logbook. I changed the ownership to me (I'm the third owner) and the status from private car to vintage/veteran vehicle (it hadn't been taxed since 1993  ).

No problem, she made the changes on the computer system, edited the original logbook with her biro and handed it back to me. Job done, took 5 minutes, no charge. :)
