its a matter of getting a dog to suit you.several questions have to be asked before you decided on a breed.

i never go out with out a dog or two with me , they will trail hot or cold ,point deer from hundreds of yards off, hold deer ,sit for hours .

so do you have a large area to keep a big dog.are you on hill or low land ,will you have your dog at heal. leave it in the jeep or at home.

do you have time to put into a very intensive training program

Have a large enough area for a big dog alright, I have been bringing my lab stalking for the last few years and she has been valuable in finding deer but she wont bark or stay with the deer which has led to a couple of long searches in heavy cover. The ground is mostly low lying and the dog would not be left in the jeep, I bring them for company as much as anything else so it would be with me as i stalk..

JD ,the first thing your doing wrong with the lab is letting off to hunt for the animal.

if a mortally wounded animal runs to cover ,letting your dog that does not bark at it a useless exercise. please note i said mortally wounded.

your bets bet is to trail /blood trail/hot trail the animal on a long lead ,i use a nylon cloths line its small in the pocket when i think of it .that way your dog will soon learn the only way its getting to the animal is with you in toe.

a badly placed shot and the animal is a strong runner is a different story.
you want your dog to take on the animal ,hold it at bay or dispatch it .

i use german wire hairs some of my friends use blood hounds .

pros and cons of the breeds could be debated all nite .

but for my money the GWP has everything ,power ,speed, intelligence, aggression when required ,loyal ,they make a good family dog also.

the other plus is use mine for pigeon ,duck ,pheasant, and foxes

OK thanks, never thought of the long lead, would like to have a specific dog for deer though so the GWP seem a good option, where to find a good one is the next question???

there was a very good litter in the north ,the last time i was talking to the man he had two dog pups left .

    dog or bitch ?

my old bitch is nine she is outstanding on deer ,i can read her like a book .her grand daughter is looking good at this stage she was 2 in feb.

what im saying is good bird dogs does not necessarily trow good deer dogs.

Would have to be a bitch, have three bitches already so a dog might cause some issues.. Much prefer training bitches anyway, never had as much success with dogs, just down to my style of training.
