The exact same thing happened in Ireland just recently to most of our classic 50ies & 60ies diesel locomotives and no one batted an eyelid.

when i was in Bulgaria 4 years ago, me and the ex went to a train station in Sofia to go and see her relatives in Varna, i was totally shocked to see an old C.I.E train pull up to the platform
It was still in it's irish livery with the circular C.I.E logo and everything :D

so at least they weren't all scrapped ;)

Are you sure it wasn't in Iran where you saw it? :D

The should ship the entire fleet of 201's out there as seen as they are useless here.

That locomotive 124 in the pic is still alive and well and used by Irish Rail for shunting purposes, The Railway preservation Society have at least two of every class locomotive given to them free of charge by Irish Rail. There are only a few groups within ireland preserving Irish Rail stock which is a shame,I suppose the different track gauge doesnt help.

Are you totally sure ? I am nearly sure Bulgaria has a different track gauge to Ireland,if this was the case it would be a massive undertaking to alter the locomotive gauge.
I suppose another answer could be the locomotive was painted for a movie over there in Bulgia,i have seen this done before.

Bulgaria is 4' 8 1/2" gauge, loads of ex BR class 86s are heading out there.

Someone on Irish Railway News forum knew what loco was used on the Iran poster and where and when it was taken! Wasn't 124 and has long since been scrapped. 134 is going to the ITG, not sure about 124.

I know of one scrapyard here that has been cleared of cars due to environmental issues, mostly 80s stuff but some earlier back to the 50s.

When was this? In the 90s CIÉ withdrew a fleet of 1950s A class diesels, but thats standard procedure for any railway company, and four were preserved. Similarly most of the 1960s small GM locos are gradually being scrapped, but again efforts are being made by the ITG and RPSI to preserve examples. One could hardly expect CIÉ to keep every loco simply because it was from the 1950s/60s.
