They are becoming a real eye sore in the city. What must tourists think when they see all the major pathways thronged with them begging?Has to create the wrong impression.

Are they paying tax on their earnings? Am I racist to complain about these people receiving welfare payments and then going out to beg for some Romanian kingpin?

Gardai should get out of the ditches they are hiding in with their speed cameras and donuts and actually trace these people to addresses and see who is profiting out of this.Is it not fraud to be receiving from the state and also earning a second income?

one thing that is not easy is standing there begging,,, every town in Ireland has people who beg,,, I just hope I never become unfortunate enough to have to do this,,, the way the country is at the moment over the next few years alot of us will be doing things to make ends meat we never taught would of been possible.

Since some vagabond act of eighteen dicktie two (I don't have a legal background-can you tell?)was appealed and ruled unconstitutional, begging is not longer illegal because beggars have to right to freedom of expression.

Do I have the right to express myself using mace I wonder?

there is a difference between people being left with no choice and people who do it as a job and have no intention of ever stopping. I've noticed gypsy down by the pay stations in dunnes but have just ignored them but this morning I was at the top of John Street [train station end] and saw a group of 6 gypsy women walking along together chatting and laughing. Cut to lunch time and I'm in town and I see one of the woman sitting begging and looking so forlorne and sad and broken down, it just read as fake and really annoyed me. I bet if I'd waited around in the evening I would have seen all of them walking back home together, all chat and laughs again. I don't want to see anyone having to beg and hope to god I would never find myself being left with no option except begging but I wouldn't give those women one cent.

why did it annoy you,,, I would of been annoyed if I had gave them money,, maybe,,, but to be annoyed because they were laughing and then forlorn,,, its alot easier to laugh with people who are in your position,,, the saddest and the poorest of people will always find something to smile or laugh at,,, it helps them to keep going.

No there's a difference between someone trying to keep their spirits up in hard times and people quite frankly taking the piss. The attitude walking down john street wasn't of people keeping their chins up but of a group of women on their way to work so to speak and then this 'O wow is me, I'm so desperate' act when they had taken up their post in town.

there was a piece in the paper about this last week (the local free one not sure of name) with a quote from the local garda not to give these beggers any money that these people don't need money and its all being organised and they are coming from e.g. Dublin in the train in the morning. There might be an online version of the article.

my own two cents. When I was small I'd feel sorry for anyone I saw begging and might throw them some loose change. Nowadays I'm to sceptical and don't want to give change that'll likely get spent on drink/drugs/people who don't need it. I'd rather give the loose change to a charity I care about. It might still go to waste but I'd feel better about it.

Ah so its down to kk they've all gone.
I have to agree with a previous poster and say id rather give money to the simon community to help the genuine homeless people.

A group of gypsey's used to beg at the traffic lights on my way to work just off the m50 one day i saw them get changed from "normal" clothes to there begging rags! Same group i saw being given a sandwich by a truck driver and she flung it on the ground in disgust.

Really makes you think there must be money in begging!
Its a pity there seems to be a growing amount in kilkenny lately.

Guys i often see these pr1cks park their van down at the bateman quay, they all live inside it and then come out for their shifts while some fat fckin roma gypsy watches over them all day, you cnt even walk down butterslip without them being there, i never even give them the satisfaction of looking at the fckers, and i wish the people would stop giving them money so they get the f'ck out of this country.

Apologies to our police force for being critical of them,I didn't know their hands were so tied on this matter.Should still be down there hassling them for papers and ask them for PPS Numbers. Revenue commissioners are based in Kilkenny, why don't they send down enforcement officers after them because if they are getting welfare payments surely their second income should be taxable or benefits cut off.Are the rules different for them?

Anyway I have developed a new strategy for when I pass them.I like to put any change I have in my fist and start rattling it as I pass them by,hoping they will approach me, so I can tell them to f u c k off!

When I lived in Paris, there was this beggar who lived on the same floor as us. The place was pretty pricey as it was in the center of Paris. This woman used to give her baby morphine to keep it sleeping while she begged, I mean what kind of looper gives a baby morphine? Any road, it is unfortunate that scammers like these put us off giving to people that genuinely need assistance. How as ever there are enough charities and agencies to deal with people who find themselves in bad positions and I would encourage anyone to give a little. I myself do collect now and again for charity (and unlike other others that were mentioned here before, it all goes to the charity).
I will give to a busker, because I do feel they liven up the street and they are making some form of effort.

Saw the opposite this morning (in Dublin). A woman pulling off her gypsy dress to reveal a perfectly fine and fashionable looking pair of jeans underneath.

It was quite the transformation actually.

A few years ago, a begger woman was done for removing the socks and shoes off her infant on a bitterly cold morning in December down the butterslip. Do you support this persons right to use infants like this? This is professional begging, it's a fact.
    It's co-ordinated. We've seen them operate.

Call me what you want, but who's the biggest loser?

Answer: the child that is denied the education that's their right in every EU country. It's denied by societies that tolerate this professional begging. This ignorance is fortified when any critical discussion is labeled "neo-nazi".

This society is frustrated as it feels powerless to shape it's own laws and this failure leads to violence and racism. Open discussion is needed regardless of how unattractive the voices and words sound. The crushing of dissent and rancor by National Socialists in Germany in the 1930's should be enough of a lesson as to what happens when society surrenders too much of its own right to protest.

I suggest everybody take sometime to have a read over the charter which a few have decided to ignore so far.

Our country is going down the swanny and always someone to champion the cause of the people who are riding us bareback! Are you telling us we are not allowed to express an opinion about people who are ruining our country and abusing our welfare system? So you are saying that you are protecting the rights of a group of crimninals to exploit children?

You need to open your eyes! This forum may not be a democracy but last time I checked Ireland was!

That's not what he said or implied at all. Opinion is one thing, posts like the couple that were infracted are something else :

Keep it constructive and there's usually not a problem with expressing any sort of opinion, in my experience.

The only way to rid the city of these people is not to give them anything, unfortunately you'll always find some soft touch who will find a few euro in his/her pocket for them.

I suppose if it provides peace of mind for them that they have done a good deed, it's not all bad. Despite the fact most of these begging 'people' are dodgy characters to put it nicely.

Sort of has me feeling sorry for those that are genuinely down on their luck and out on the streets.

Maybe the upshot is that I'm now considering giving to an organisation like the Simon Community, and shunning the street begging 'professionals'.

Agreed. The best way to get rid of them is to ignore them. When they realize they can't make money in Kilkenny they'll go somewhere else. The irony is those Professional beggars are more than likely better off than the people they are scamming.

They do that hear and take whatever it is they are selling, but recenly they've taken to hiding the stuff under baggy clothes once they see any uniform before the police see them, but once they go undercover they can see them without them hiding the stuff

what sickens me is when they use their children to draw pity.

and why do they always target carpark pay stations? dunnes, superquinn and the mult storey on pudding lane?
if i give them my last €2, how do i get the car out?!:confused:
hello, recession?? that and the fact i dont believe that they genuinely need my help, they have mouths full of gold teeth, if times are that tough theres a pawn shop up John st.

i was in manchester recently and there were alot of homeless people in the city centre, some begging, some just kipping down for the night,
we passed a woman begging while on our way to the banklink and said we were sorry we had no money.
she then thanked us for acknowledging her.
    *pulled at heart sstrings*
she didnt choose to be homeless, we did go back to give her money and food but she was gone. a just cause, unlike the gypsys

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,533 ✭✭✭✭Dan Jaman

If I may throw a comment in.
It's unfair to categorise all Gypsies as like this lot. I've known a few who simply wouldn't do this kind of thing; this lot in the city (indeed, in many cities in Ireland) are simply chancers who are not representative of the majority of Romany people I've met.
Professional beggars are a pain in the fundament and should be dealt with using existing laws regarding vagrancy, for all they do is rob the goodwill and money that people would be prepared to give genuine hard luck cases.

Much, much better to contribute to The Simon Community or St Vincent de Paul, as these agencies know who the real needy are. Of course it's difficult to walk past some woman clutching a child and looking pathetic, but unfortunately you must harden your heart these days - too many 'scammers' out there in all walks of life - and anyway charity should begin at home.
